i was wondering, what are the longest living freshwater fishes?
and they have to fit in a "home" aquarium, not one in a zoo for something

gold fish can live upwards of 20 years :p I've heard of arowanas living for 50 years, but that's in a like 4000gallon tank

The oldest "trade" fish on record seems to be the koi, with individuals living multiple human generations--100 years is not unheard of at all--and, APPARENTLY, the oldest koi on record died at the age of 226 (calculated by looking at growth plates on scales under a microscope, much like tree growth rings). I'm still trying to track down how true or untrue the 226 figure is, but I"d still give koi the nod for the oldest fish, as there have been some just ancient ones.

A King carp (Common, Mirror, Leather) can live upto 45+ years. I caught a 21lb 5oz mirror carp and that would of been about 20 years old.
They arn't tropical though. Joemuz

hmm tough one
in the tropical (marine) fish world, I think this maybe the longest lived
Patagonian Toothfish Dissostichus eleginoides
