live rock

Is there a way to get rocks for cheap and then grow them into live rocks???
ive read that you can.

You can purchase what we call "Reef Bones" in the UK. This is "dead" live rock, basically liverock that has been left to dry out and all life and bacteria has been detroyed. If you put this in your tank then it will soon replenish its bacteria. however, it wont replensih the life that was once onit it unless you have it "seeded" with true living rock.

You can of course make your own live rock and this is quite popular but the curing methods means it takes a long time. You do however get to be able to make exactly the shpe you want for youre tank. Again you will be able ot get the bacteria but not the life that grows on liverock.

I wouldnt suggest using anything else... Tufa rock can absorb toxins and nutrients and then dump them back (or leech slowly) back into the tank. Lava rock is not absorbant enough, ocean rock isnt absorbant at all. )
