Hi all any news on the foma situation? also iam right in beliving im using the right test kit to test the ammonia / cylcing. i dont have the box only the chart and small bottles and it says nh3 / nh4 this is the right test right?

ok so tongiht i added 27 drops of ammonia and it went dark green on the chart which is 5.0 so now i wanna let it go back down to 0 on its own right? not keep it at 5? then once it hits 0 boost it back up?

also re the foam, i read somewere on a goldfish site that its due to high bacteria and i should change the water though its read didnt sound too sure also should i be changing the water mid 4 days into the cycle? i thoguht this would kill what ive started doing? also fi i should change it how much?

thanks all sorry for all the questions, hope im using the right tester.

NEW PIC OF FOAM, OLD LINKS WOULDNT WORK.

hiya yes NH3/4 is an ammonia test. do you know what brand of test kit it is? is it a liquid test?

i don't think the foam's too bad i'd just leave it. bear in mind advice to change the water would most likely be for the fish's safety, you have no fish in so don't need to worry about it for now. just let the cycle run through and when it's done you'll do a big water change before getting fish in anyway.

don't add more ammonia just yet, keep testing it every day, in a few days it'll fall off and when it's dropped significantly (i.e down to 0/1) then add some to take it back up to 5ppm.

Wicked, thanks for your help, wicked as ever! lol think im now understanding it all alot more, im thinking maybe the foam is part of the water changing states all the time etc, hoping it will clear, if not as you said it should vanish when i do a water change. i might skim it off the top of the tank and see if it builds back up again. i have a No2 Testing kit, is this for the nitrates? also my ammonia tester is a water based one, adding 7 drops of each checmincal (3 bittles) to 5m of water) its a SERA one. i did another test this morning and its still at 5ppm so thats good...

Cheers.

Scott.

yup no2 is to test for nitrite

here's a good topic about water chemistry you should have a look through http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=59467

yeah your not wrong there, while your tank is cycling it may go green, cloudy, foamy all sorts, it's cos of the bacteria nad chemical compounds in teh water constantly changing. when it's cycled it'll settle to an extent however there will be a lot more reactions still going on, it takes about 6 months for everything to really settle down, this is when your tank is classed as 'mature'

ah ok, im obviously a few weeks off yet.. however regarding fishes any sugestions? i like the neon tetra so im sure ill be getting some of them simply because the glowingness i love lol, however any other ideas as the tank is a 30 leter so i dont wanna bet getting something that will grown 10ft lol. also do i have to worry about breeding, because im not sure i have the hands to be doing this etc also not the tank or space for another tank..

cheers

scott.

have a read of the two topics in my sig 'fish suitable for a 10 gallon tank' (yours is 8 gals) and 'how to work out stocking lists'

the key really is research research research. the fish species index is as good a place as any to start.

you are quite limited with a 30l tank unfortunately you can't have neons in this tank, they stay small but like a lot of swimming space, need a tank about twice the size of yours, also becuase it's a bi-orb the funny shape gives a limited amount of swimming space so it's almost more like a 5gal tank than a 8gal one. :/

also neons are actually quite delicate fish and need a tank at least a couple of months old, put them in your tank when it's just finished cycling and there's a fair chance some of them will die.

if you don't want fish to breed don't get any livebearers, or if you do then don't try to save the fry, you can just leave it up to natural selection, the vast majority of fry will get eaten so you won't end up overrun with fish.

if it was my tank i would go with

2 sparkling gouramis
6 harlequin rasboras
3 amano shrimp

even that is a relativley heavy stocking for this tank though so you'd have to be on the ball with maintenance, also bring the stocking up gradually, get the rasboras first then add any other fish over the next few months

Ahh ok, thanks. shame about the neons :( really liked them. would getting a 60l biorbbe a different story. main reason i like the biorb is the lack of space needed and worktop space.

yup a 60l would be just about OK for neons i think, still probably a touch on the small side but it wouldn't be awful.

if you love neons i'd advise you to get cardinal tetra's instead. they look virtually identical but are much hardier fish

space can be a real problem so I do understand. And I do like the look of the bi-orbs, just unfortunately the size and design of them doesn't leave you with all that many options.

but i'll bet you in 6 months time you'll have magically found the room for a bigger tank somewhere, once the fishkeeping bug sets in you'll soon realise you don't actually need a tv/sofa/fridge/bed and that space could be much better occupied with fishtanks :D

we've got a tiny 1 bedroom terraced house, got two tanks in the bedroom and three in the living room. total of about 750litres worth. living proof you can always find more room ;)

ha ok, possible, i dj you see so my living room had decks right were you could but a massive tank :p i think im going to look for a 60l biorb for now and see how a 60l gos though the 30 i think will be fine for gettting started. fingers crossed ill pick one up cheap and maybe in a few months time ill upgarde to a "real tank" lol

yeah when Ian moved in with me he had a choice of what he could bring with him cos space is limited, the big fishtank or his decks.

the decks went on ebay :p that being said when we move in a year or so he's claiming the spare room as his play room and getting some decks again as he does miss it.

what sort of music do you play?

i do think it'd be an improvement if you can pick up the 60l, it gives you a bit more room to play with and the tank will be more stable and easier to maintain. if you do get the bigger tank then transfer over all the substrate and filter sponges into the new tank or you'll have to start cycling over again.

Hi
am relatively new to this forum too. It been lkke a soap opera reading this thread.LOL

I was going to suggest a few posts up that he get a bigger tank, as those bowl tanks arent healthy for breathng for fish eh...

What II joined here in Leeds is a freecycle site. have you guys heard of that?

There s often fsh tanks given away free.

Though bought mne in proper fish shop, but did get two loaches from a freecycler.

People is shops do give various dfferent advise. My shopkeeper told me to buy the bacteria and add two capfuls first week to filter then one capful every other week. for fve weeks.

After the frst week I got fve neons and after the first day one died, but the others survived for the remaning of the time.

EAch week I have added more fish gradually and they all survived.

Was very interested to read about the lights

But the shopkeeper said keep changng the water in the tank when the ph at the begnning was too high Then the nexxt week the ntrates where too high and no fish......

The the other guy said dont change water..

It is quite scientifc...

But we have to agree it is great when we can see al lour fsh ( and my frog) swimming happily about . YOu gaze at the tank , eh even when watching the tv.

So a big good luck with the tank...

Get a bigger tank now

And yer we shoudl look after out goldfish better.
Though I dont seem to be able to kill goldfish lke other folks do.

40yrs eh... wow!!!!!I may have to will them on...LOL.......LOL
