I havent added any ammonia to cycle my tanks since I cant get a hold of it, but I do believe it depends on the concentration of the Ammonia, eg 5%, 10%, 15%. You can add small ammounts and test the water and see if you need to add more. Or another way to be sure is to add some to a large bucket and see how much was needed to raise the level to where it is, and then simpley multiply to get your tank volume.

ok thanks, so tonight ive added what i belive is pure ammonia ( doesnt say % on bottle ) but ive added 12 drops as i read this somewere, should i be adding enought drops each time to get it to 5p right away or should i be adding over a few days then checking to see if its getting near a high? is 12 drops enough it seems a small amount compared to the 30l of water lol also how often after adding it should i be checking for changes?

As a note if it will help, yesterday i hadnt added any ammonia, it came back yellow on the test (0/1) today i added 13 drops and checked it again about an hour later its now green ( 1/2 ) so this is good news right? should i be boosting it till it his red today or gradualy getting it to red over a week?

I think you should top it up right now, all at once to about 5ppm. If this is red on your scale then yeah, add it until it becomes red. You probably won't need to add anymore ammonia after that for a while. Just make sure you check daily and once it gets to 0ppm, top it back up to 5ppm.

Oh, and for my 34 litre tank it turned out to be about 40 drops of ammonia to get it to about 5ppm, so yeah I think 12 drops is a bit low, so try adding some more. Of course, I'm not sure what %ammonia I had, and I don't know what you have! But if 13 drops makes it 1/2ppm then you probably know yourself you need to add more. Check every day, but it probably won't change too much for a while!

you can work out how many drops you'll need by doing it on a smaller scale. get 1litre of water in a jug, add 1 drop of ammonia, mix it and test it, keep adding and counting drops until you get to 5ppm, then times the number of drops by 30 (cos your tank is 30litres) and that's what you need to take you from 0ppm to 5ppm :good:

ok kool, so tonight when i go home and add enough to make it 5, im not going to be adding any more until it drops to 0 correct? then once it hits 0 i should bring it back up to 5 and keep doing this untill it taks 12 hours to drop / gain? correct? so im gussing tonight once ive boosted it it would take some time/days to drop however over the weeks become more faster at droping untill a 12 hour point?

this is what im trying to achive right?

P.S ive also developed a small amount of foamy water over the last 3 days on the top of the water / tank. im guessing this is fine? looks a lil like when you visit the beach and the tide crashes in and go's foamy is this alright, im guessing its the bubbles / biorb design doing this? or isit a problem?

spot on :good:

only thing to remember is you top up when ammonia reaches 0, but your not ready to add fish until ammonia and nitrite reach 0 within 12 hrs. you'll find the tank can process 5ppm of ammonia relativley fast then you'll have to keep adding daily while you wait for nitrite to be processed in 12 hrs.

sorry i added this fater your reply to the above post.

the cloudiness is bacteria bloom, nothign to worry about it'll pass when the tanks cycled. the bubbles again i don;t think you should be concerned about but it's slightly hard to visualise what youre describing, can you post a pic of it?
