Me and my partner went to a local store and to our amazement saw a baby sturgeon. Both me and my partner immediatley recognised it for what it was long before we read the label and also another person browsing the store was miffed.

Looking on the internet it is apparentyl illegal to sell this species as it is protected having been over harvested for its eggs as cavier. The fish was there yesterday I forgot about it in the meantime and it has just popped into my head. I am unsure if it needs reporting or not.

Any help thanks, it has probably been rehomed by now though...

It's not likely to have been re-homed if it was large, they are fairly large aren't they With things like this, if in doubt, give a shout to the local council whom issue their licenses. If it is legal or controlled and they have paperwork to back-up the legality of it's stocking they will be fine. The Authorities will take the appropriate action if the check you claim and find an illegal species, or a controlled species without the paperwork on the premises

well just checking Defra and websites like that, certain types are a no go and other types are restricted. He was a baby at about 3-4inches. I think will locate some numbers and give a call tomorrow..

Not sure they sold alot of them at southern aqautics in christchurch before they closed...black in colour....theres a bloke on aqauriast classifieds selling them from poole, i think they may be a different variety

Are we sure this is "Sturgeon" and not surgeon??.... The latter being legal.

the ones i see at southern aqautics i see everywhere,there blackish in colour and must be legal as everywhere sells them, they are beautiful sold for outdoor ponds and do better in colder temps..

I have seen many sterlet for sale in lfs.even sold myself in the past..as said some are banned but other species from specialised suppliers and breeders are still widely available...some will carry cites certificates which you will recieve on purchase , legally enabling their sale and you to keep it

laods get sold round here most places with a pond section do sterlets/ sturgeons normal black/ diamond and albino so they must not be illegal but i do know you need a defra licence to sell sturgeon not too sure about sterlets though i dont think you do for them

we where on about this to my mate who owns a very good lfs and he was going to start selling them but he hasn't got his defra yet and he reeled off a list to me and they where on it i might be abl;e to get a copy of what the defra allows people to sell if i ask nicely lol

we sell sturgeon at work no problems, we have a license, sometimes we do accidently get illegal species in by stockists, i.e, we order them because the list names the species wrong, it could be that the shop ordered them from a list that called them "diamond cafish" or something, in that situation at work a member of staff took the species home and kept it there, and reported it to defra
