King Betta

I have one. Gentle giant, unless provoked is how I'd describe him.

Keeping Betta raja from an Aquarist View

Housing

Betta raja can be housed in pairs, species tanks, and community tanks. Pairs can be housed in a 10 gallon tank, groups should be housed in a 30 gallon tank or larger. Pairs should be given cover such as caves and plants. In a pair or species situation it is possible that fry could be discovered in the tanks. For best results remove a brooding male.
Water Conditions

Not critical, raja is very tolerant of water chemistry and thrives in almost any type of water as long as it is clean and well filtered. They should be kept at cool to mid 70s F.
Sexing

Males have a broader head then females and have a caudal spike typical of pugnax complex and longer pelvic fins. Females ovaries might be visible via spotlighting.
Reproduction

Raja is a paternal mouthbrooder and the male incubates from 12 to 18 days with 14 days being consistent. Incubation time can vary with water temperature. Females normally initiate spawning.
Similar Species Similar species would be pugnax complex members.

Wow. So this species of betta can be housed together?! If that's true, I would definately setup a species tank for them. Problem is, all I've seen is males and no females.

I wouldn't go by their housing information as if you look under Betta Splendens they give the same advice for them

well i think they meant the wild betta splendens seeing as how most wilds can be kept in pairs or groups. the domesticated bettas have had aggression bred into them haven't they?

Im wondering if I should get the extra large betta. As for the person saying they can't find bettas at petco that will live. I have a copper delta tail that I got at petco and he is about 7 months old and doing well. But yes most are in sad shape. They are shipped to the store in tiny bags that the fish can hardly fit in. So sad poor fish .

petco is starting to have some interesting types of betta. however the stores around me the bettas are still near death or only 1.5 or 2 months old and its very hard to pick out one that will live.

they never have anything other then vt or sometimes ct females, I want varity.
Yea i agree my petco just started to have crowntails. prob Hms laterrss.

Betta Splendens are descendants of the wild Betta. Wild caught Bettas do not look like the ones that most of us have. They look they way they do because of selective breeding.

Alot of people are in two minds as to whether the aggression is bred into them. Bettas are still being used for fighting in places like Thailand but they are the short finned PK types. We've also noticed that in our PK spawn there was alot more aggression at an earlier age than fry from our long finned Betta Splendens.

Now we know Mim is a PK for sure, that might explain why mine are so nippy at 4 weeks!

Lol....oh the joys of PK babies. All ours were separated at 4weeks. They were at it hammer and tongs the little beggars
