Keeping Fish And Working Full Time

Hi

Im a newbie at this and i have had a tank for just over two weeks, so you can probably disregard my comment but i love it, every night when i get home i do my water tests, check on my fish, do the water changes if i need to and then basically everything else comes second. I am still sitting watching my fish for hours and hours on end, I really love it at the minute. I have only got a small 45 litre tank (12 Us gallons i think) and i really really wish i had brought a bigger one. My next project is going to be a marine tank i think cause my other half wants really colourful fish ( i need a bit more experience first though).

Anyway i am sure you will fall into a routine with general maintenance like i will have to when the novalty wears off.

Good luck and congratulations (on the job)

James
Marine tanks are a lot of work and a lot harder to keep! There are many many very colourful tropical fish. Have a look at some of the Mbuna, you might be surprised!

I have to say that's not nescessarily true, marine tanks are significantly more expensive to keep and do require you to do a lot of research before hand. however if set up correctly they are very stable and easy to look after. We're having all sorts of problems with the FW tanks due to lack of time but the SW tank virtually runs itself, we've amazingly managed not to kill or get any disease with a single coral, invert or marine fish. SW tanks are much closer to a natural self supporting system, with the correct equipment, a reasonable sized tank and sensible stocking they all but look after themselves. only need to do water changes every other week and a little bit of top off for evaporation in between and even that can be done automatically with the right set up.

They are however much more difficult to get working correctly again if something does go wrong so the key is research so you get it right first time.

But your right about checking out mbuna and other african cichlids, a lot of people will go for them as an easy/cheap alternative to marines, they're very colourful and lively, present a bit more of a challenge than your standard tropical fish and make for a lovely rewarding set up :good:
