Journey To The Planted Side

Ok Ok thats enough about her LOL

Any idea on my stats and how to lower my PH please :good:

:p

Lower your powerhead, so you are not getting so much turbalance on the surface :good: (well, thats what I would say if it was a marine tank :p )

The ammonia is strange - how can you have ammonia and nitrAte without NitrIte - these planted tanks are weird!

Ive just a thought, could it be that you have a plant dying in the tank which is causing the ammonia spike, hence no nitrItes? That doesnt make sense though, surely if the plants are using the nitrIte, they would also use the ammonia  I believe planted tanks need nitrate :good: but at a lower level - so maybe a water change?

Trod, lets hope someone comes along soon who knows what they are talking about

Thanks big sis, good tip about powerhead, I'm still getting confused between salty and no salty

I don't understand those results at all, its all so confusing over here

Why are we testing the water?? Put the tests away, they are not needed here. Plants use all three, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. That you have ammonia means that there is something decaying in there. Expected as some plants will go from emmersed to submerged growth. Is that anubia in the center planted in the substrate, or attached to the rocks, I can't tell.

Seffie that is a very nice tank. But you have a non-aquatic plant on the lower left.

Wow, that a bit's of a bonus

Yes, will take out that offending plant

Yes, remove offending plant. Oval-shaped Purple leaves, in the left corner. It's called purple waffle, something like that. Scientific name escapes me. I've got an article in PARC on the non-aquatics.

It is a bonus. I haven't tested water in years. LOL, if I become a saltie, that will be something to get used to, testing water. I'd love too to take the plunge. I've got an RO unit, does 100g. Got a nice lighting fixture, a nice 36g tank, Powerheads... I have a lot of the equipment already for a decent SW for some simple corals, fish, and LR. But I really love the laziness of a planted tank. It works for my busy schedule. I can leave the tank for a month or more and it's fine. There are SW systems like that too, I'm sure, but the livestock is much more expensive.

Guys, I'm so tempted to setup that 36g again, it's not even funny. But I want to do something interesting with it. LOL, found out I'm not moving over the summer like I thought I was. Housing market stinks, I better stay right where I am. Gonna fix up the old homestead instead and do some cleaning and reorganizing. Minor home improvements too.

Wow no testing that is a bonus :good:

The anubia is in the substrate. It could be the vallis decaying it is going brown and transparent at the top??

When will I know when its safe for fish, if not testing :dunno:

Anubias should be attached to rocks & wood. If the rhizome is buried, it'll decay, causing an ammonia spike. As for the vallis, what's your basic water quality, hard or soft?

How often do you change the water? Many here, if the tank's planted densely enough, will add fish right away. I'm more cautious & will usually give plants time to adjust to their surroundings (convert to submerged growth, etc) before I'll add fish. In my current scape, I waited a month.

Come on Liz, you know you want to jump into the salty side :p after all it would just be wrong having all that equipment around. My tank doesnt require a lot of maintanance :good:

You would be talking about a weekly water change on a 36 gallon of 20% and a good magnet scrape every day whilst you look at your reef.

Your main expense would be the live rock

Seffie x

ps I dont test my reef anymore, it is pretty obvious when something needs doing :good:

pps Ooooppss sorry sis - off topic again!

pps
just had a read about that purple waffle plant, fasinating: Source ehow.com: 'You probably don't hear the word "phytoremediation" very often, but it describes a fascinating process -- the ability of certain plants to remove harmful pollutants from indoor air. Scientists at the University of Georgia have found that some plants are better at phytoremediation than others and dubbed them "super ornamentals." The purple waffle plant (Hemigraphis alternataa) is among them. The University of Georgia website cites a 2009 study by the World Health Organization that claims 1.6 million deaths a year can be attributed to indoor pollutants. Because of this, learning how to care for your indoor waffle plant becomes even more important.'

Yeah, the LR's the only thing holding me back. 36g bow isn't a teeny pico, so I figured that would be expensive. The initial setup is time-consuming I think with all that cleaning and stuff. Sorry for being off-topic.

Uh huh, growing plants, I know about that ability. Pothos does it well also, as do some ivy species. Basically, it's a fantastic arguement to keep plants indoors. And they're just pretty.

Where's Trod, I asked her a couple of questions...

Yes sorry for delay I'm at work on my break, no idea about water how would I find this out???
I've got some bog wood so can easily attach it to that, job for tomorrow, haven't done any water change yet, is that another job for tomorrow??

Right back to work :-(

Oooo, how long have you gone since a waterchange? No, you gotta be on top of those when a planted tank is young. In a new scape, I'll do them sometimes daily if I've really made things dirty. Usually, it's like every other day in the beginning, then I taper off.

I keep things very clean in the beginning.

As for water quality, here's the reason why I ask. I've got pretty hard water, so sags, crypts, and vallis love my water. I tend to not do well with soft water species. Used to, and I think there was a time when the city added softener right when I returned from IL and I had a couple of really nice scapes with stemplants, but they stopped doing that and now it's back to liquid rock central. You're not dosing any Excel or Easycarbo, are you?

Sorry you have to go back to work.
