what is the true way to tell a jack dempseys gender without venting? I got a male with pointy fins yet carries the female mouth paterns but its largest out of 4 of its age. I got an odd one that is the exact opposite and has drab tan color with stubbed unextended fins but the plainest mouth ever. Whats the deal?

from the discriptions that you give it sounds like it is exactly that. size at a young age isn't exactly a scientific way of assesing gender of a fish, nor are the fin extensions.
