So, for my birthday I had asked for one of the 29 gallon Biocubes, but my mum spent the extra money, and to my surprise she got me the JBJ 28g HQI. I love the way it looks and the lighting setup. I am saving it for when I move so I can finally transfer everything from my hex tank. In the meantime, I'm reading up on the tank. Does anyone have this tank and is there anything they have learned along the way with it? I've never had a system this sophisticated before, so I am trying to adsorb as much info as possible. Does anyone know much about the stock skimmer?? Any info would be a great help. Thanks!

Hi Joe

Well, your mum did you proud there :good: I don't recall anyone having that tank on here but they are similar to the boyu only better lighting. Whats the problem with the skimmer?

I'm not sure there's anything wrong with it, but it appears people replace it with a Tunze or something more exotic. I don't think I'll replace it unless I have issues with it. I'm wondering if people added extra powerheads or is the stock flow with the wavemaker good enough?

I agree, wait and see what the stock skimmer is like :good:

Can you show us a picture of the insides please -can then give you a more informed answer. Can you also tell us what the stock wavemaker is?

Hey seffie -

The wave maker is a Ocean Pulse Duo Wavemaker. How it works, I have no clue. To be honest, I'm figuring out my substrate and maybe some other parts I'll need (Azoo fan if it gets too hot, powerhead, ect) before I even think about taking it out of the box. I'm more than likely having surgery, then moving to my new place in the next month or two, so unfortunitally this baby comes third on that list lol.. I'm also trying to figure out how I'm going to move all my live rock and livestock to this tank when it's all set up, without killing anything or producing a major cycle..

Hi, smokin'.

I know a fair bit about this tank as I have read all about it. I have the old 24g JBJ and it is an excellent tank. The problems you may encounter with this tank include: Overheating. That is the only flaw with this tank which is excellent and terrible all at the same time. I wouldn't worry about the skimmer as for nanos don't need a skimmer. Once weekly water change is all that is necessary. The middle chamber can be converted to a refugium and that will help no end. The skimmer is a simple air powered affair which is actually brilliant because simplicity is best. How big is your hex tank and what filtration does it use? When I changed my tanks over I just simply moved it all in one go. I took the filter sponges from the old internal box and threw them in the back of the Aquaray 200 too. That works for me just keep an eye on the ammonia and nitrite.

Hope this helps

Do you know what the average temp. is when the lights are on? I read around 80 degrees F, which isn't too bad. It's what I keep my other tanks at. I found a lot of people convert the middle chamber, but I have not seen any instructions on how to do it. My hex tank is a 29 gallon. It uses a HOB filter with carbon and phospads. Nothing too special. I have 3 powerheads in the thing and still can't hit the dead spots where I get cyno. Overly frustrating... I can't wait to set this thing up.

So when I move, I should just have my tank running with sand and water, and then put in the LR and livestock? I only have 2 fish right now (sixline wrasse and false perc clown) plus some inverts, but I'm totally afraid of a major cycle..

Put the water in first, bring up to temp and SG
Put in your live rock
Put in your sand around the liive rock

I take it you are just moving everything from the hex? Are you adding more live rock?

Yeah I'm basically moving everything, LR, fish, inverts, maybe a powerhead or two. I will not be adding LR, more than likely taking some out. I have a lot of it in my hex, and I'll have to see how it looks in the JBJ. As far as sand, I think I am going with a black sand. The only buffering sand I've found that's black is livesand. Will that create a cycle by itself? The LR is obviously cured and will be transported in tank water. I haven't picked a place yet, but I'll be moving no further than 20 mins away, so it wont have a long travel time. Will everything survive if I go the LR - Sand - Fish? Won't the water be extremely cloudy?

Everything will be fine for twenty minutes transported in water :good: however yes, the tank will be cloudy - I would set-up a container for the fish overnight and then put them in when the tank is clearer

Well I understand the foundation behind adding sand after the LR, but in this instance I may just do it before hand to avoid any complications. I don't have any sand sifters right now so I wouldnt have to worry about my LR comming down. Another question I've always had, which could be answered on another post is: Do all of you use epoxy or some type of glue for your live rock? Or do you just stack it and wedge it together? Is that not safe long term??

You will get many answers to this - some use putty type substance, rods, etc but most of us just stack and that is because we always change our minds about placement

One thing I read about the JBJs is that the glass cracks on the curved corners by the lid. This is why I was going to get a biocube over the nanocube.
