they are doing it to medakas too

on a personal note, I really can't believe that one of the
worlds formost ichtyologists is involved in this matter.
Fang Fang has lost some of my respect.

I dont see the point in doing things like this all in the name of profit! Where is the logic in creating a fish that glows in the dark? It's not science it's exploitation perhaps they should experiment on eachother before animals so they understand what they are doing! Tempting to sign up and leave a post on the board about how outraged I am about this sort of thing :grr:

I didn't realise that there was a forum on that site. :*)
mods, please don't remove the link, I know that technically this is breaking the rules, but it is an important link.

now that we've done small fish, now lets do african cichlids and discus! IMO they're not colourful enough and need to glow in the dark, lets make black ghost knife glow fluro green! this would be awesome, then lets do marine fish, then dogs and cats and elephants!

what has fish keeping come to?

I already have pink elephants... I don't get to see them often, but they come visit when I have had a night out.

And back on topic... Yeah dwarf I think a fluro green ghost knife would look cool! Kidding

Seriously, don't know where I stand on the whole GM thing

I know they've used jellyfish genes in piglets and they're snouts were then permanently pink or yellow! It is stupid the way we play with genes what is the point in it surely we should be happy with the genetics that we have and same with the animals on the planet! If the fish were meant to glow in the dark then they would have developed the gene to do it naturally but at the end of the day they arent so we shouldnt mess with things!

I hope it back fires on the people that carry this sort of research it would teach them to mess with something else

Well, I'm going to get shot down in flames for this (and I didn't read round the above link in detail), but I'm not too bothered by playing around with genes. A lot of illnesses are being cured or better understood by genetic advancements and sometimes things are discovered by accident when scientests are 'playing around' with ideas. I don't like genetic mutations that cause discomfort but are these glowing fish in pain? A lot of pure bred dogs were bred for looks as well as working and quite a few have been bred purely for looks, so isn't this something in the same vain? As for playing around with all fish and making 'better' versions, isn't this true for many bettas, or guppies, that do not look much like their more 'natural' counterparts?

Cobe 27 I have nothing against selective breeding in animals yeah ok it weakens them but it is totally different compared to adding a gene from another animal into that animals genetics! There is a difference in the way the procedures are done! What good is going to come from glow in the dark animals, surely the money they spend researching these things could be spent much better in getting rid of poverty around the world and educating people instead of creating freaks that arent supposed to be as if they were they would already be glow in the dark!

Pedigree animals that have been bred purely for looks are known to have a whole host of bad traits which include bad hearts, joints, deafness, blindness all for the sake of looking good! It will be the same when they get these designer babies which I also disagree with! Yes artificially inseminate someone that cant have kids fine but don't use it to save another ones life imagine how you'd feel finding out you were created just to save your sibling it would not be nice or to find out you were conceived in a test tube just to be good looking! I know I would never like to find that out

there is a diffrence between selective breeding and genetic modifacation. altho i do suppose its got its good points, being that they will let you know when water quailty is getting bad, and the novelty for kids, besides that whats good about them? its un-natrual, who knows what new desiese these "tainted" fish could produce.

many people would argue tho that its natrual that god gave humans the ability to think and thus to develop past the cut off point that all other animals have. so thus by giving us the ability to think outside the box, its enitrly natrual for humans to produce GM fish, crops and even clone sheep. Its even getting to the point for parents to kill unborn babies so they can get stem cells to save themselves from some desiese or illness. I think we are gradually going past the point of humanity; and GM fish is just the start of a long chain.

but nehoo.... i love fish!! woo YEAH ! :D

I really don't think that the money from this is going to solve world poverty. Otherwise, we should get rid of everything that isn't strictly necessary. You could give up the money you spend on your fish and send it over to some starving family in a developing country, for instance. There's plenty of research that people think is a waste of time, but that's how new things are discovered.

As for pedigree animals, a lot of their ill health comes from being in-bred and people breeding for money rather than improving the breed.

I think that if my parents chose my sex in order to save my brother then I'd be damn proud that I was able to save his life and I'm sure I would be loved just the same as I am now.

If fish wanted to glow in the dark they would get a neon kit like the chav angelfish in my signature.. innit. leave that choice to the fish eh..
