It's almost Halloween

I will not be handing out fish or plants to trick or treaters, lol. I did have a kid charge into my house, "Cool tank!", I said politely "You really shouldn't go into strangers' houses" & looked for a parent. In a way it was cute...& another way scary.

I had two brothers show up one Hallowe'en evening. They were in the 8-10 year old range. We gave them the usual candy, then the younger one said "We saw aquariums one time when your garage door was open and we'd really like to see them."
The Mom ran up from the sidewalk and started apologizing, but it ended with all 3 on a fishroom tour.
The younger son grew up to become a fishkeeper.

I decorated tanks for Christmas when was a kid, but not since. We get no Hallowe'en kids here. Funny. There's a Catholic graveyard across the road in front, and another Protestant one behind us. We have a long dark driveway up to the house. You'd think it'd be perfect.

No way in gods good world with little fishes will I be putting anything like the above into my tanks..... Nor do I still keep snakes that I can take to the door to show the children who used to ask to come and see them after the first year I dressed up as a witch and used one of my snakes who loved to be out and curl around my neck to keep warm and 'people watch'.

The following year and for many years after, kids used to come and bring their parents to have a look, and the braver ones amongst them to have a hold of a few of my very well mannered and easy going snakes.

Now they just get candy, and after 9pm I close the curtains to let them know I don't want to be disturbed.

The last two decades, Halloween has become popular overhere as well. It seems that we have adopted certain holidays from the US the past years.

When I lived across town, we went ALL OUT for Halloween- I put big speakers in the windows upstairs, had loud scary noises coming from the house. Had a smoke machine next to the front door, had a graveyard in the front yard, spiders & webs on the mailbox, random flashing lights in the garage window, orange lights in all the other windows, and various other scary stuff (none of those blow up things) hanging around.

Occasionally we would have to take candy down the driveway to little ones who were too scared to come up LOL. We also gave out big candy bars. My wife was very good at spotting ones who came back for more- if I was at the door, they got away with it.

However, in those days, I only had 1 29 gallon tank in the house, so it was never much of a draw and it wasn't near the door anyway.

We moved in town to a townhouse. There are no kids around here of school age. We either have young folks or old folks like us in our neighborhood. I miss handing out the candy.
