This morning I came in, and my snail was upside down trap door closed. I could see bits of the black sand stuck inside. I flipped him over, and put an algae disc near him, and he started to come out of his shell, lopsided at first, then he did what is pictured. It seems, that he was pushing this sand from inside him, out in this pattern. He seems fine now...just confused on what I just saw.

I've no idea about the behaviour but that's a great picture!

What type of rock is that in the background?

Thanks! It was taken with an iPhone 4S. It is a sandstone rock of some sort, came with the tank..doesn't seem to cause any pH issues.

I think if I'm not mistaken it is what they do when they are stressed?

Methinks, that he probably landed on his side and in his/her attempts to get upright.... it gripped onto the substructure and collected a lot of it before finally succeeding (with the weight gained from accumulating the gravel).... to get back some balance.... Once done.... he discarded the counterbalanced burden and was back on "all fours"... to move around normally again.....

Sounds logical to me.

Thanks for the input, he/she did it again today, but moments later was climbing up the glass again. Maybe just a strange personality!

One of mine enjoys jumping off tank walls and eating my new vegetation (stopped doing that when I gave him carrot though). Some snails are weird. That one also will come out no matter how many times my fish will bump into him or even if I lift him up. He even started gnawing on my hand. So cute.

Yours might have tried to bury himself in the gravel, as I've seen mine do this after a good feed.
