Yeah do exactly this, removing the dead and damaged will allow it to use its energy to grow rather than repair
I personally would not time the damaged leaves until you see new growth. The primary reason for thesis that plants cannot repair damaged leaves The damage is permanent. The damaged leaves will eventually completely die and and then fall off. By leaving them on you keeps thee parts that are still converting light and nutrients to food. I would simply waite for confirmation that the root tabs are working (new growth) before I do anything else.
