Interpet Internal Filter

Not having an internal filter im not sure how they work, but my friend has one of these interpet internal filters and if he does not use the bubble feature he finds his fish start gasping by the next morning, its one of those fish boxs and he cant really have the filter just above the water level regardless.

do you reckon he needs to just replace the sponges in this filter to keep it clean, its only a concern as he has just told me he has scrubbed it thoroughly but it tends to stop working properly after a few hours?

anyone had this problem?

chance are its his stocking levels and or water quality

if its not working properly after a few hours then the filter might not be strong enough for the current stock

how is he scrubbing them? dont replace anything as that will have all teh good bacteria on it!

I have a fish box, why can he just move the filter to just agitate the surface?

air stone or direct the flow to disrupte the surface this is how i have mine
