Hi

I am changing filters from internal jewel filter to external one (fluval 405)- What is the best way to do this

Is it best to run both filters and for how long?

If you are doing away with the internal,then just put the media from the internal into the external filter.

The best way is to pack all the media from your old filter into the new one.

You can run the two filters in tandem, but as your old filter is already proccessing all the ammoina from your fish, very little new bacteria will grow in the new filter. Plus, when you remove the old filter, you'll be losing at least half, if not most, of your bacterial colony.

several weeks. personally i leave it for 2 months. but i removes a portion of the old media, once a week after the first 3 weeks, till its all gone.

lol, yeah good point. i have ceramic media, so the sponges needed to be removed and replaced with my media. but, if you have no need for the sponges, there is no reason to take them out.
