My bettas gill is constantly sticking out like he's half flaring and appears to have some sort of tear in the top but it is very tiny.

My tank is betta friendly but recently i have had an ammonia spike which i am changing water 1-2 times daily for. Here are some pics.

He is acting normally and his tank is 9.1 US gallons (35 litres) which he shares with three kuhli loaches
The injury does not seem infected or dirty at all. I have turned his light off to prevent him flaring at the glass

Please help

What caused the ammonia spike.
Has he teared his gill on anything in the tank.
Do the gills look red and inflamed.
Any excess mucas on the gills.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing or laboured breathing.
Any holes in the gills.
Any white edging to the gills.
Any green tinging on the gills.
Do the gills look mottled.
Any fungus growing on the gills.

Can't make much out in the pics.

What caused the ammonia spike.I'm guessing the 3 kuhlis and i've hit a mini cycle. The tank was cycled for 2 months prior to adding fish
Has he teared his gill on anything in the tank.As far as i can see there is nothing he could have torn it on but it does look like a tear
Do the gills look red and inflamed. No it has the same colouring as the opposite un damaged gill
Any excess mucas on the gills. No none
Any signs of flicking and rubbing or laboured breathing. No behaviour is quite normal
Any holes in the gills.No
Any white edging to the gills. No
Any green tinging on the gills. No
Do the gills look mottled.No
Any fungus growing on the gills. No

Can't make much out in the pics.

I have moved the filter output to increase airation because ive turned the heater up to combat bacteria.

Does the gill look swollen.
Dosn't sound like there a parasite involved.
It sounds like an injury to me.
Have you posted in the betta section aswell.
No plant that have sharp edges, or ornaments that have sharp edges.

I have posted in the bettas section but i'm pretty certain it is just an injury as there is no inflammation or discolouring.

What should i treat with if anything to combat infection?

I have to be carefull with the kuhli loaches there sensative to some meds and salt i think.

Its it a 9 gal tank or 7 gal. As 35 litres I think is about 7 gal.

I would just half dose some melafix as not all fish tolerate it to well.
The gill dosn't look red and inflamed.

The bad water quality won't be helping either as it can burn there gills.

I would only half dose with having the loaches in the tank.
It should tell you in the instructions on how much to use for your tank size.

According to one site in 10 drops per gallon.
So for 7 gal that would be 35 drops at half dose.
I would still check the instuctions before you dose.

If things get worse get back to the board.
Good Luck.

i would hold off on the melafix for the khulis sake(and some bettas cant tolerate any). just keep clean water and it should clear up..sounds like an injury although i couldnt really tell from the pics you posted.
water change water change water change and he should heal in no time! many times, clean water is the BEST remedy! (and i feel that this is one of those cases)
cheers
