Inch Per Gallon Or Cm Per Litre?

Weight and volume as pretty much the same thing in this case. A fish's density is just a hair over 1000 kg/m^3 (the density of water) -- and it would not be a huge error to just assume the same density as water. So, if you have the wight of the fish, you can always convert it to volume and back.

Thanks, I knew they were close, but not how close. So it seems to me that weight & volume could be interchanged, so why not weigh the fish to figure volume, if this is even a reasonable way to figure stocking? A small container of water as tare, then add the fish.

While weight would almost assuredly be the most accurate method to calculate stocking for any size fish, you would need some pretty precise equipment. I can't imagine my bathroom scales would be able to tell much difference when I dropped a neon in bucket of water. And that would only work to calculate the stock you have as I doubt you would be able to find fish weights anywhere. As someone mentioned before, it's hard enough to find an accurate length. And what scale would you use as in grams per gallon? Who wants to volunteer to start weighing fish for us????

I'm finding fractional gram scales online for $50 or so. They measure down to 1/100 of a gram, toss your neon on that baby! :good: I am looking around for a better scale for weighing out blackworms, though I don't need one that can weigh individual worms, 1/8 pound to 10 pounds is a good scale for my needs.

Just for giggles I'll see if I can find a cheap fractional gram scale from wherever I get my worm scale, since shipping will more than likely be covered already. It would be interesting to see how the weight compares to the length, and see what variances there may be putting it up against what many people consider safe stocking rates.

How's about, we just use 1 inch per US gallon.

That's pretty easy.

Hey, that's brilliant! Easy for anyone to remember, why didn't I think of that?!? :good:

Seems like every time a stocking rate topic turns debate it always comes back to KISS. There is enough for a new aquarist to get their mind around at the beginning, no reason to steepen that learning curve.

 I'll bring him right over. What's the guess on how much a neon weights? How many will it take to make a pound???

Upfront, I do apologize because this is way off topic, but Tolak, do you ever watch Cops? Don't go driving around with that thing because if you get pulled over the cops are going to think you are dealing drugs with that thing. I'm not sure that they would buy the "I'm just trying to weigh my fish" excuse, either.

Bad boys bad boys...

Mr Tolak, put your hands on the trunk of the vehicle...

They would think I'm really into something heavy if they caught me with the worm scale as well;

I don't think my club membership card would get me out of that one!

They are both getting shipped to my house, I see no reason for the smaller scale to leave, I'm sure the larger one will come in handy for weighing flake food for the club, which comes in bulk.

Every shop I've worked in has had a triple beam, for weighing ink mixes. These tend to "disappear" every once in a while. Gee, I wonder where they go. ????

I do have a gunpowder scale for reloading, it goes down to 1/10 of a grain, or 1/70,000 of a pound. The pan is so tiny you could fit a neon, but no water.

Classic. I'll have to start watching Cops now, especially when they go to Chicago. The last time you see Tolak, he'll be doing this >>> :byebye: as the cops lead him away.

This reminds me of one I heard on one of the angel forums quite some time ago. This breeder moved, and set up the fishroom in the basement of the new house, somewhere around 60 tanks. Being new in the neighborhood, with triple the electric & water usage after 6 months, plus the basement being lit up for long hours drew some attention. Enough attention for the local law enforcement agency to suspect they had a gardener growing something illegal.

Several stern looking officers show up one evening, with a search warrant. "I breed fish" was in no way a good enough explanation, they had to look to confirm what they thought was a really lame excuse. They were much more relaxed when they saw all the tanks & fish.

Oh from a simple noob question to this. Brilliant!

Always wondered why there isn't a pinned topic about this...

Just write in big bold words :

1 INCH PER US GAL

Close the topic, and then whenever anyone asks, direct them up to it.

I think it could be a bit bigger
