I'm So Screwed..

Well today a person dumped a bag of endler/guppy hybrids on me. Literally gave them to me and walked off without a word. Problem is, the place I work, since we can't legally sell them, they would have to be destroyed.

After counting, there are 17. I've managed to spread them between my 3 tanks, putting massive strains on the filters and 2 emergency tanks which will be needing 95% water changes daily.

Put this on top of my already mini-cycle problems of changing gravel and I'm changing about 90-100L of water per day.

I couldn't just let these poor things be destroyed or flushed, it's not their fault they exist.

Can you not dish them out to local members? I mean if people have suitable tanks? Most people can accommodate them in smallish tanks.

Nearest tank which can hold them is about 30 miles away and with this snow weather, I'd dare to travel 3 miles, let alone 30, especially with a bag of fish on me.

You should post which area you are in and offer them to board members for free. Even if they are only taking a few at a time it gets them to people who want them and will look after them.

do you have any preditory fish you can feed them to? its kind of the same concept of them being destroyed but its in a more natural way. let not go to waste!!! and if so find the guy who gave them to you and you may have free feeders for life!

Look for a local club, taking in that amount of fish is no big deal. I've been involved with taking in a few bags of fry to having to set up a 150 gallon tub to coordinating the breaking down of entire stocked fishrooms with several other members. This is what clubs do, and what we are for.

Only other thing if you work at a pet store is borrow a tank to put them in until you can dish them off? If that is where you work, I don't know why someone would dump fish on you otherwise! lol.

That's a tough predicament, bud. I'm with you on this, stay strong.

I agree that flushing them down the toilet isn't the most humane thing you can do. How you about this ...and please think about it before dismissing it.... how about deep frying them and eating them? I know it sounds unorthodox, but it's actually probably the most natural thing you can do. You will just be putting them back into the food chain.

You can use a Chinese recipe they use for insects, here's one i found, slightly adjusted it for your situation

Guppy Fritters

3/4 cup sifted flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
3/4 c milk
1 egg, slightly beaten
3 TBLS of guppies
1 pt. heavy cream beaten stiff

Sift flour, baking powder and salt together into a bowl. Slowly add milk and beat until smooth. Add egg and beat well.
Pluck off guppies' tail and fins, heads optional. Dip them in egg batter and deep fry. Salt and serve.


Considering how attached you've become to the guppies, this would be so climatic, the two of you becoming one. Use chopsticks for best experience. And send a picture if you can.

Ok i'm sorry if i sound rude but i don't find that appropriate to be posted on a fish forum where members intrests are keeping fish healthy and alive. Besides you should never eat tropicsal tank bred fish due to the fact that they could have come into contact with certain medications that would have ill affects on humans.
Please think before you post.

Many medications used for treating tropical fish are not designed, or allowed by law for fish that are raised as food. Other medications require a period of time after administration before those medicated fish can be sold for consumption. On this point I wouldn't go cooking & eating tank raised ornamental tropical fish.

Just in case you hadn't noticed, this is a forum for tropical fish enthusiasts, most everyone values the life of their fish, as pets for the most part. The do not consider them a culinary item. Just a guess, but I'll bet there will be some members who are offended by that idea, no different than if you posted Korean recipes using dog as an ingredient on a dog forum. Members here will see it no differently.

Nonetheless, let's not turn this into a flame fest due to this idea. It does, as stated get them back into the food chain, though in a very unorthodox manner. Plenty of people, including myself, have had fish jump out of the tank & get into the food chain due to another pet, though this is from every case I've seen unintentional.

the thing is, pets at home for example, wont let you sell mice or hamsters as they sell them. they lose profit from you

advertise them as many places as you can and hope they go
