what do fish shop people look for in employees ... there about 5 local shops i can work in so my chances arnt too low i have a broad knowlede on simple fish

should i put in that i keep fish and am doing alevel biology?

anything else that will make me seem like 'tom, super employee' ? :D

i need money for freeze festival :D

if its a chain store that is not maidenhead aquatics then you need to shove products down customers throats...id you have a hobby such as modelling tell them, if you like socializing tell them! it shows that you have self confidence and that you can talk to people easily.

when i applied for maidenhead i put on my application that i had knowledge of fishless cycling and the nitrogen cycle, putting in biology sounds good also! just say the usual: that you are polite and have customer service skills

good luck anyways though!

im getting a job at my LFS soon too, i go in so often i know the owner pretty well and i asked him for a job the other week and he said sure.

just know what youre talking about adn dont be afraid to ask questions ;)

lol ... could i ask how you applied ... witha covering letter , cv , or aplication form ...

maiden head is one i will apply for , wildwoods is another, and two other little stores privately owned

i cannot tell you how gratefull i am for any comment in this thread.... any more info from any experience fish shop worker is greatly apreciated...

you think i could bribe em with a free bn :p?

i walked in and asked for a job and he said sure... ;)

i said since im already there almost everyday he might as well pay me to be there. haha

A good knowledge of lots of different aquarium products, and which ones are appropriate for solving customers problems would be a good thing to mention.

Also, don't just say that you know about fish and the like, simple things like being tidy up as you go. Polishing tanks and de-algaeing while you water change, and knowing that it important not to leave clutter (like buckets during a water change) lying around are fairly important things that rarely get mentioned, even though they are extremely relevant to the job.

In other words, mention things you know about fishkeeping, but don't focus on things like fishless cycling, how fast carbon is spent or the poor survival rate of ottos in captivity. Focus on how good you will be at selling the right products, and making the shop run efficiently.

If you have experiance in retail before, saying that you are very friendly and active around customers would be good too - but mention that you don't waste time with customers, and can get on with a job while chatting to them. Being friendly is great, but there is always something that needs done when your not actively selling something.

Been working Saturdays (and 5 days a week most holidays) at the LFS for...3 years now? Started full-time a few months ago.

Just like any job. They want reliable good workers above all. It would be helpful to say that you own your own fish tank. It shows you know what it take to keep fish. If I was looking for people to work at my fish store I would what.
Reliable
friendly
love of the hobby
someone that what's to learn.
No Slakers

but that's just me.
Good luck if you love the hobby it should not be hard for you to get a job in a fish shop.
