I'm about to sell this specimen as s/he's too aggressive with my Severum. I believe it's a Geophagus Brasiliensis (which I recollect from the retailer but as their labels are usually hopeless I want a more experienced eye..) Can someone confirm?

Video on YouTube.

I'll be posting to the classified section once species confirmed, collection from Cambridgeshire :)

at first i thought electric blue....but then i noticed the black dot and several blue chicken pox dots and i think it could be like a jewel but those are brown and have a different face....i wanna say electric blue lab-jewel mix but i doubt its possible
btw those are both africans that i named

FWfishlover - what are you on about?

To the OP yeah it looks like G.Brassiliensis quite a nice one as well, just wondering what size tank and stock it is looks to be really nice do you have any full pics or full vidS?

"fwfishlover-what are you on about" what do you mean

You just took such an obscure guess at what it was. And I dont understand why you jumped to the conclusion of a hybrid when it would have just been easier not to post because you didnt know.

Yeh its a Male Brasiliensis, which type i have no clue, but it is the common type which imo is the nicest, the Bahia type are not as nice.

definitely a geophagus brasiliensis, quite a nice one too, i suggest you re-home it soon as then columbian tetra scales floating about after the bite at the end of the video doesn't seem too good!
think its female due to the lack of points to the dorsal and anal fin, very nice specimen though.

i was telling them an idea i got i never said that was the sure thing

^ Its male, the colours of the females are different, like a browny colour.

I had a 11" Male, it was beautiful and it lived with medium tetras like Black Widows and with Severums, was a nice fish, wish i didnt sell it on.

I have been going crazy looking up G.Brasiliensis they are realy hard to sex when young. Once they fully mature you will know. Venting is the only sure fire way to sex them or watch them if you have a pair. I have a Bahia red. So I have been doing lots of research on them. But I agree it's a common G. brasiliensis.

its not a male, there is no difference in colour when they re that young, they change quite dramatically in shape and colour when they mature. but males, even when young show 'pointier' dorsal and anal fins than the females, and start developing their nauchal hump at quite a small size. i had a group of 1 male and 2 females and they look very similar, certainly not brown!!

I figured it was a really nice one - the colours really are very vibrant. I would love to keep him/her too but he's growing and my severum is not - the fact is he's chasing the severum at all times and especially as soon as he approaches food so severum's not eating a whole lot.

I had looked at sexing but he's just too young.

Thanks to all for the feedback!

It's definitely a geophagus brasiliensis - beautiful fish, but quite aggressive in my experience. It was only my GT (and she was weeny then!) that stopped him anhiliating the rest of my stock (that includes my Columbians that are in the video! PLEASE remove them from that tank if you can't get him out!).

Whether it's male or female doesn't matter at this stage, the most important thing is to rehome him with other suitable fish

Oooh so glad you posted all that info everyone, I was going to exchange some of my Ellioti for some of these, definate no now. Hope you re-home him ok.

mine is the Bahia red kind and I would not call him aggressive bossy at times yes. he will push my severum out of the wayisometricimes but never gets Nasty. He has never hurt my other fish so far. They all eat well together no problems. So is all depends on the fish personality. I know some can be teritoral and even aggressive. Mine is 4.5" and I have no aggressive isues with him. Just normal cichlid stuff i have had him for almost 2 weeks and they are getting along better and better everyday.

So if you want one you could try it out and hope you get a nice one. Don't be scared that all are mean because it's just not ture. I have read about people with aggressive severums. If it turns out to be a bully just return him. With cichlids you never really know till you try it.

Only get one don't get a few. They get big fast and are aggressive with there own kind and don't like other geo. But do fine with differant kinds of cichlids of simular size.
