Okay, so my first time treating for this. Couple questions. Have two tanks I'm treating for this.

First tank is a 29 gallon with 2 plecs and a black skrit tetra... It has an aquaclear filter running on it with sponge, rings, and carbon. I took the carbon out and put the medication in.. It was specific for scaleless and tetras. Jungle Ick 2 was the name.


Second tank is a 10 gallon empty tank.. It's my hospital quarentine tank. The filter on it is a cheapie aqua tech that came with the 29 gallon tank kit from Walmart. It has a black cartridge that looks like black biological sponge stuff. I left that as it doesn't look carbon related at all. The other cartridge is blue with black plastic screen on the back that looks like the ones in my Emperor Bio Wheel filter. Anyway, in case it has carbon in it (may, I don't know..), I took it out of the filter and just rinsed it in old tank water and placed it inside the tank near the filter. I don't want my bacteria all to be lost, so will this work. It should keep the meds from being filtered out and yet not kill the bacteria. Will it work. I also may put the carbon from the other tank in this tank to keep wet. Any use? I know I don't have anything alive in it, but I really don't wanna take a chance.. My fish lady (the ick didn't come from her, btw) said I could treat my nets, everything. So I'm assuming the hospital tank needs it too. She advised me to ditch all the filter media and start over, but I really dread that! Then I medicated.

When I treated for ick with a Quick Cure a malochite green / formalin mixture I left the filter media in place and did not lose my biological filter. Do not ditch all your filter media. I treated 4 full doses over 10 days and then put some carbon in the filters to take out the medications at the very end. Carbon only lasts a few days so I removed this eventually. With an empty tank, no fish in it, just wait a week before you put any fish in it. There is no need to treat when there are no fish. The ich parasite does not have a very long life expectancy without a host to live on.
