I have been wanting a new tank for a little while, and yesterday I got this for £128 on eBay. It's a Juwel Rio 240, and I was thinkning it might be big enough for Boris and his companions now...lol

This is Boris wondering where he put his map.....lol

It took 2 hours to set up and was hard work, but well worth the effort. So, does anyone think this is an inappropriate tank for a betta? lol

If I put on some fins and agree to eat fishfood can I come and be a betta at your house?
That's one spoilt betta...good job!

That's a great tank for a betta. But the companion choices are distinctly unsuitable . I can see tetras for one thing, and I think I see a gourami and a guppy as well? . I would say you need to plant it up a lot more . He'll need somewhere to hide and rest, so lots of thickets of plants is needed instead of random clumps. Hygrophillia Polysperma is a really good one to try, Amazon swords, Cabomba and Aponogentons would all be good choices for that tank.

I have to ask, where did you get that Cathedral arch in the middle? I want one!

I wondered how long it would be before someone mentioned his companions. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not criticise his compatibilty with these fish, he loves them to bits, and no-one bothers him. He fancies the male dwarf gourami (probably because he has never seen a female betta and is confused...lol) and he will only display to him or a Black Widow if they go near his food. No-one nips him EVER and he is a very special betta, he tolerates anything, including the sight of another male betta. So please, whilst yes an awful lot of other bettas cannot be in this type of environment, Boris can, and Boris does, and Boris enjoys. It's not a good example of the general rules as such, but I am a very lucky to the exception to the norm.
As for the cathedral ornament, it was given with the tank, so have no idea where it came from. And great news, since 10am this very morning, we have had fry born too from either tthe mollies or guppies. All is good :D :D :D

And another, for good measure :p

oh relax people. must you always attack people. fish have different personalities, and give the space boris has if there is trouble he can certainly get away. i am sure that devorax was very cautious before he put them together and kept an eye on them. i keep guppies with my girls and no one ever bothers each other.
give a person a chance before attacking.

That is such a cheap tank, £128 is a bargain :hyper: Do you think you could get me one??

Glad to hear you've had fry good indication that your water stats are fine in such a new tank.

Boris is such a placid little fella, there is always exception to the rules and he is proof of this.

How long have you had them together for? I'm surprised you've found some black widows that don't nip, I've never seen them before. A rare breed apparently. Beautiful setup and Boris looks VERY happy... congrats! And SCORE on the tank, talk about bargains!

Hahaha thanks for diverting my attention to your tank!!!

LOVE IT! What are those really colourfull flowers in there? Did you just get those from a normal bargin shop in their fakes plants section?

....imagine how many your could house if you were to divide it? ;)

Ebay is great for tanks ;)

Exactly. My betta is in my 3ft with a Gold Gourami, 2x Clown Loaches, 2xPlecs, an Albino Cory, a Tetra and 4x German Blue Rams! Perfectly harmonious tank Occassional the GBRs squabble but thats just them.

Hi all, thanks for your drooling...lol
The bright flowers are actually part of the ornament, which I understand is a dedicated Bi-Orb item, intended to sit over the middle air column. It is about the only static thing in there that adds any real colour!! lol But now there is plenty of floor room in there for more pretty decorations, which will happen once everyone has settled in there.
It's great now, the rummies are shoaling together properly, the neons are too, they never did that before. Even the shrimp are now out and about swimming with the fish. Sometimes it seems as if they are trying to race them!! :hyper:
The Black Widows seem to be reasonably common in our area, I know of 3 LFS that have them in often, they are also known as Black Skirted Tetras, so maybe Laurafrog has seen them but under a different common name. They have never shown an interest in any other fish, and certainly have never suggested to me that they are 'nippy'. My luck with this combination just continues onwards....lol
Thanks for all the comments, keep them coming, it helps my ego!! :fun:

I've seen black widows alright, and the ones I've seen are all fin shredders. What I meant is that I've never seen peaceful ones before, because if they won't nip a betta they won't nip anything. The ones I saw were going for corys, swordtails, everything!

honeythorn my bettas are doing fine in a 55 with gouramis and many other fish many on here would object to :shifty:

but i have had no problems.
the thing with gouramis is they have a much different personality then bettas (i also think they can hold their breath longer! lol) also the gouramis you want to stay away from are paradise fish!! they are evil!
i have a trichogaster species, i think 3 spot? and they do fine.

the other fish are 2 jewel cichlids(they think they are bettas) 2 blue cichlids (not sure what kind) 1 pantodon buchholzi, 1 rope fish, and a rainbow shark

Oh see ive seen Black Skirted Tetras before. They are cool. It all depends on your fishies personality as to if they can live together. I have african cichlids in with south american cichlids and apprently thats a big no no. But they all get along fine to be honest. They grew up together so they have learnt to live with each other.

Very nice tank. Only crit I could give is to maybe get some kind of plant, real or fake that goes close to the surface for him to relax on.
