I Accidentally Bust A Myth

laste saterday i was doing a major cleanup. and the filter that running my twin UV filters, got airlock. while i was sorting out i switched off the UVs.

today i noticed glass is becomed bit dirty if you know what i mean. i was thinking what went wrong.. coz i rarely clean the glass as i dont have to.. this type of smokey algae is never come back, atleast for two months..


then i reallize i switchd off the uvs

What "myth" do you think you've busted here? UV does an excellent job of decimating populations of microbes in tanks. It just never gets rid of 100% because it doesn't treat the entire tank at the same time. The fact that the algae regrew so fast tells me 2 things 1) there was still some seed population left that only needed the UV off to take off growing again and 2) that conditions in your tank must be ripe for algae to grow.

Ppl argue here, uv works or not.. I found out it indeed works. Many Many people thinks it don't.

I got aqua science 22 k blue spectrum lighting. Plus heavy stock.. This is the problem.
So I use uv and sachem carbon to control the algae with great results.
Uv plays big part in my aquarium.. without it, I might scratching the glass and equipments every week like most of you..


Why can't I rely on uv..? Is it running out?

No one is saying you can't use UV to manage algae in an overstocked tank. However, your have to bear in mind that if any part of your system goes wrong then your tank's condition / water quality will go down far quicker than in a correctly stocked tank. There is very little room for error in your tank but if you are happy managing that then good on you. I am happier knowing that my modestly stocked tank will cope far longer with an unexpected powercut, fish death, equipment failure etc. but that doesn't mean it's the only way to do things.

So, again, why "myth" do you think was "busted" here? I still don't understand exactly what you think the myth was, and what you did to bust it.
