I, being a little upset learning that puffers rarely feed off the surface, have successfully trained my puffer to eat directly off the surface, thus not having to take the floating excess food out every time. If you are interested, this is what I do.
Take a block of brine shrimp
Put block in tank
After about four days he got very used to the floating block and ate the block almost at once. It is also really good to put in the frozen peice because it helps take care of cleaning. Since my puffer is able to inhale an entire serving of ice brine shrimp, there is less brine shrimp to get filtered, bottomed, surfaced, etc. Good luck! If you want pictures, just ask!
