How Oftern To Do A Water Change?

Hi guys, just a simple question... how oftern do I do a water change in my tank? It's new and in the cycle at the moment so i'm geting all the info I need befor I actualy get to that stage (thinking ahead!)

I will be adding 4 Zebra Danios to my tank to begin with, and how oftern do I change the water and how much? Does this depend on what the tests read at? Or is it best just to change 50% of the water every x ammount of days?

I change 25% of the water with a gravel vacuum once a week.

The best and safest way to cycle a tank is a fishless cycle.

I do not recommend a fish-in cycle, but this is what you want to do.

For water changes, you do a water change whenever your Ammonia and/or NitrIte is over .25 ppm

If fish are exposed to a higher level of ammonia than .25 ppm, this will give the fish permanent gill damage.

If fish are exposed to a higher level of NitrIte than .25 ppm, this will give the fish permanent nerve damage.

So you must do water changes whenever the Ammonia and/or NitrIte is over .25 ppm.

Also, NitrAte starts to become harmful to fish if it is 50+ ppm.

Yes, test the water every day, even twice a day to be safe; once in the morning and once at night.

Once the tank has fully cycled, (Ammonia and NitrIte will read zero on your test kit), then you only need to test once a week.

Personally, I don't test unless I suspect a problem.

once the tank has been cycled and is up and running, 20-25% a week with a gravel vac.

what size is your tank? I use a 10L bucket for my tank (125LTR) and as its a big enough body of water I dont bother heating it to a similar temp as my tank. I just fill from the cold tap, add water dechlor then pump it into the tank.

Why make things more difficult, a fishless cycle is sooo much more easier on both you and your fish.

You must do water changes until the NitrIte reading is at or below .25 ppm (mg/l).

Is this a fish-in cycle?

If so, if your fish are exposed to a higher level of NitrIte of .25 ppm, your fish may get permanent nerve damage.
