How Much Sand Do I Need?

i have a 50L tank and wondering how much sand i need as i am new to the fish keeping world could do with some advice
the tank measures 50x38cm on the bottom and would like like sand to be about an inch thick

I have a 90L tank and bought a 25kg bag of sand for my tank.  Used around 3 quarters of the bag.   However, I have a planted tank so the depth at the back was alot more than 1 inch.    I'd recommend getting swimming pool filter sand.  The grain size is larger than play sand which means it doesn't compact as much.   It's better for plants too.
I reckon you'd need around 15kg.

In my 125L I put a whole 15kg bag of Argos play sand
 
It's pretty deep but that means you can suck a bit up while cleaning without worrying. Plus it was only like £3 for the bag!
