Hi, i'm new here, but i've got a cold water aquarium which has been very successful.

Today i've bought just a small 25ltr tropical set up and am wondering how many fish this would comfortably hold. I quite fancy neon tetra's and guppies, but how many would be suitable?

also whats the general water temperature for these fish with this size tank?

thanks

Hi, welcome to the forum.

25 litres is approx 6 US Gallons. The general guide for fish stocking is 1" of adult fish for every gallon. Therefore giving you 6" of adult fish.

Which unfortunatley isnt much, however, if you decided to go with neons, you could possibly add about 10 as they are not high waste producers.

Does the tank have a filter?

We recommend on here that you do a fishless cycle, please read this thread of how to this: http://www.fishforums.net/content-page/113...ination/page/0/

Neons are not the hardiest of fish, so the tank will need to be fully cycled before adding them. As for Guppies, they can be sensitive also and need good water quality, once cycled, you could add 6, but make sure they are male as they are prolific breeders and you would soon find your tank over run with babies.

The temperature in the tank needs to be about 24 - 26C.

Alternative for a tank that size you could have a single male betta. Or you could go for a Shrimp tank.

You could also have several female bettas or pygmy corydoras. You could put in six or seven neons and three pygmy cories to help clean up the tank.

hi thanks for that. yes the tank is complete with a bio filter and heater.

the cycle is started already to get the water conditioned accordingly and will remain fishless until all tests are carried out and results satisfactory.

any ideas of what could co-exist with neon tetras without nibbling them?

i've seen a couple nice types of barbs, but have a feeling that they might be nippy little fish?

barbs like a lot of area to swim in...i wouldnt add anything except neons, mollys, maybe a betta, 1 dwarf puffer???? not all together...just 1 of the species. also...i think shrimp would be ideal for your tank. they can live happily with other peaceful fish and breed very well.
