Hi everyone, I'm new here. I'm into the numbers side of fishkeeping: how much water a tank really holds, how heavy it is when filled, and how many fish fit in it. I've been building a small free set of aquarium calculators as a side project, so I read a lot of tank specs and I'm always learning where the label size and the real water volume differ. I'm here to learn from people with real experience and to help where I can with tank size, volume and stand-weight questions. I've read the rules and will keep to them. Looking forward to being part of the community.

Welcome to TFF.

Your particular numbers thing is interesting. Maybe you’ll enjoy working with the many water parameter numbers associated with keeping a tank.

What kind of fish are you into?

Thanks for the welcome, bgarthe. Good point on water parameters: that's where the numbers get more interesting. Most of my time goes into species care data for a stocking calculator I'm building (84 species so far), so I'm reading about fish more than I'm talking about my own. What would you say is the one parameter a newcomer should learn to read first?

I'm a fish words and language person, far from a math one. But while we're all different, it adds up in the end.

We have a local club member who has been great at calculating stands and weight bearing, as an engineering minded carpenter. When he dropped by the fishroom, where all supports were made by me, he walked around, studied everything and pronounced it safely overbuilt. Whew.

What would you say is the one parameter a newcomer should learn to read first?
I know the question wasn;t for me - but temperature... then the systems for measuring water hardness.
