my fish in a big plastic storage box?
i plan to put the heater and filter in the box with tank water for a few hours while i completely overhaul my tank.

Should be ok for a few hours just make sure they can't jump out and the continer is clean and sanitary for food.

When my neighbor's tank kersploded I kept her fish in a large rubbermaid storage tote in my fish room for 3 months until she got her floors redone and a new tank ordered. 125 gallons allll over...a nightmare.

So yeah, as long as you need.
