Alot of good points and reasons for setting up your tank in a certain way. I agree with Amano mostly. Definitely the tank set up should relfect the fishes needs but that doesn't mean there can't be some intent and purposeful arrangement that also look attractive and appealing.
I'm planning to do an open space in the middle of my tank with only small, sparse decorations there since the majority of the bottom dwellers are Cories but I also intend to add some hanging/floating fake plants as well as tall real plants to the back and sides to help break up the light penetration without cluttering the upper levels for my Neons and Clowns.
