How Do You Pronounce "cichlids"

i have another pronounciation question. how do you pronounce bichir

I've never had to say bichir before, but It shares the same 'ichi' as cichlids so I'd follow suit.

I wonder that myself, and I have one!
I always say it "biker" because that's how the owner of one LFS says it, and she's generally very knowledgeable about fish...

I was always confused on what to call cichlids so I just ended up calling them Chiclets... like the gum... I still do it every once in a while out of habit....

Another one that gave me a lot of trouble was gourami. I have said it gore-a-me but all the lfs people said gromy. Still have no idea what's right. How in the world can it be gromy?

i guess the only way we will find out about pronounciations is to ask the person who came up with the names

I believe it is gur-a-mi.

I only found out how to say cichlids yesderday! After a lot of chich-ilds and chich - lids at home i went to the lfs and in a conversation said 'i love bettas don'tknow why i mean some people, like you, take to ' and he finished off with siklids. I was like eh? that's not even how i'd imagine you say it!

Now i've often had a heated debate on the pronunciation of betta! In my case i can never pronounce Banpeaw one of my wild bettas, so no one near me knows i have one! )

The 'CH' in the middle of a scientific name is pronounced like a k - this is the right way.
