Hi, i have recently set up a malawi tank using sand as a substrate, only problem is my sand is really dirty, how do u guys keep it clean, i have an eheim ecco external and a fluval u4 internal in a juwel rio 400?

Only real way of keeping it clean is by regular vacs of the sand by hovering a gravel vac about 1" above the sand to pick up any waste.

Malawis are notoriously messy so you are probably having a little bit more of a problem that you would with lets say a standard freshwater tank.

I personally dont mind seeing the waste on the sand, it adds to the natural look and makes it easy to see when it needs cleaning, once a week should keep it at an acceptable level.

Also malaysian trumpet snails would help keep the sand clean
