i have 2 in my set up, however the larger of the 2 keeps going for the smaller one...the smaller 1 hides or runs everytime it see's it coming, to be fair the big one don't leave it alone, its ok with the other fish in there it don't bat an eyelid at them...is this fish attacking it or is it just playing?? i have no idea if they are male or female..i'm just getting annoyed with it now!!

many thanks nikki

How many fish do you have in your tank? How big is the tank? If there are too many fish they may feel crowded and the bigger fish may get annoyed at the smaller one and try to chase him off.

To me it doesn't sound like playing, it sounds like bullying. If you just got these fish maybe you can take one back and make sure you have two that are the same size. This way they will probably get along more.

If the bigger one keeps picking on the smaller one it will probably get sick and might die. I would definately do something.

If you can't take them back maybe you can put a plastic mesh down the center of the tank to separate them until the little one grows bigger.

Good luck!

you either have 2 males or a male and a female...
a picture would help, if its 2 males you need to get rid of one if its a male and a female yu could do with another female as the male will peser the female for sex,...

millies are community fish and need a few of ther own kind i made same mistake as you when i stared synce then mine had babies and are now fine but wher thers only 2 they fight like crazy get 3 more mollies and u should be fine mate

sorry folks i didn't give much info did i!! ok when i say bigger fish its only slightly bigger....i also have in the 2 neon tetra's(other 4 died) and 2 siamese(sorry sp) fighting fish...neons went in first had them about 2 months now and mollies were added a few weeks later...we have a 15 gallon tank....i will try and get a pic of the offending fish and the other.....

many thanks,
nikki

Mollies are easily sexed, you just look at the anal fin (the one under their bottom). Females have a fan-shaped, fin-looking fin, but males have a sort of rod thing, known as a gonopodium, acts like a primitive willy.

yup, if you look at the back underside of them you can easily sex them, just look if they have a willy or not! :)

you need to keep 1 male to 2 females for them to be happy nad not pick on each other.

i'm also concerned you have 2 siamese fighting fish in there. I hope they're both girls!!! Do they have short or long fins? generally speaking long one's are boys, short are girls. You absolutely cannot keep 2 males together, they're called fighting fish for a reason! Sooner or later they will kill each other. They shouldn't be kept with fish like mollies or neon's either really, they're not community fish at all and do much better kept alone. :/

the fighting fish are both girls the man at the shop explained to us what u can have and not have together..i'll try and work out the sex of the mollies...thanks for the info as i didn't have a clue till now how u sex them :/

good stuff, now girly fighters can also be aggressive between themselves, it's best to keep 6+ of them to spread the agression out, keep a close eye on them for fighting.

here's a pic to show you what your looking for

the bit sticking out the underside of him...... that means he's a boy :D

the picture don't show for me, sorry, anyways its def the female fighting the male, so do i get another female??? i'm angry too as the bloke at the shop said the fighters would be fine with the mollies and the neons. grrrrr!! i'd rather believe anyone on here to that shop, they seem fine at the mo though, not attacking any other fish

someone made a poignant comment on here once

the man in the fish shop however helpful is earning his wage from selling you products
us on the forums are giving advice for free, in our own time and with no personal benefit.

so who do you think is going to give you the best, least biased advice? ;)

fighters vary in they're personality from fish to fish, so you may be lucky, however an awful lot of them will attack anything of a similar size with bright colours, so anything like mollies or neaons that are brightly coloured will be a target :/

see they're easy to sex aren't they?! yes get another female and it should reduce the agression :good:
