I prefer using black lights, they turn out really cool and the water looks cool. The fish are not affected at all.

Are blacklights easily available and cheap?

I would not recommend black lights as the strong uv light damages the reproductive organs of fish (and other living organisms if strong enough).

What you could do is place aquarium grade peat moss over the sand- it is the only thing I can come up with.... or almond leaves I guess

peat would be good, my fish like slightly acidic water, and dosent peat moss make it more acid?

It sure does. It also makes the water tea colour. Tetras and south american cichids will love it.
