How Can I Make A Cave For A Jack Dempsey?

I recently bought a 55 gallon tank and i have plans to stock it with 12 tiger barbs and a single Jack Dempsey.

I've read that they can be somewhat skittish so I'd like to build a big cave that he can seclude to if he wants to seek shelter. Ideally I want the cave to be big enough to comfortably fit a full size Dempsey... even if that means using a third (or even half) of the tank for a cave.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what materials i should use in building this cave?

mine loves to hide out in a slate cave that i got off ebay its not the most natural looking cave but you could easly make one yourself out of slate and solicone

if you go to b and q ask for slate paving slabs that are broken and they will give them to you for next to nothing or free

Get some rocks and make your own cave it's really easy to stack rocks.

Or even a PVC pipe would work.

You can buy aqua silicone in most lfs. I went to the building site my dad was on and got about 30kg of rough slate that was dug up for the foundations. worked really well for me, tho my lobster re-arranged them to suit herself.

thats an expensive way to do it. the "aquariums silicone" is the same as the stuff you buy at a diy store. just cost 10 times the price. all you need to do is read the back, of the tube. if it says its aquarium safe, it is, whatever its main use is stated to be. in truth there is no such thing a "aquarium silicone". just silicone that is safe, and silicone that isn't.
