I use a couple of large stainless steel wood screws that I thread into cucumber slices and drop in the tank. They sink right to the bottom and I don't have to worry about boiling any nutrients out of the veggies. Also the stainless screws don't rust or leech anything into the tank (boil them for a couple minutes before the first use in case there is some sort of oil residue on them). When the fish eat all of the cucumber it is large enough that I can use the long grippers to grab them without reaching 20"+ into the water.

I use cups as little houses for my bettas

Cups and houses shouldn't even be in the same sentence together! Unless,of course, it was...
I took my betta from this cup and moved him to a real house.

I think what oppositearmor meant was the same as what I have done before, turn the cup on its side and use as a little "house" inside of an acceptable-sized (2-5gal) betta aquarium. I used one of the small pint-sized glass "betta bowls" and even left a little air inside it and the betta would hang out in there and take a breath from the trapped air sometimes without ever leaving his "house" to go to the surface.

At least I hope that's what was meant

The neatest thing about that was when I was doing water chages if the timing was right I could just pick up the small glass bowl with the betta still inside and remove him with very little stress. Then change the water in the tank and place the bowl back on the bottom and he almost didn't notice.

I once used a pretzel jar to house a betta..held almost 1.5g...

I also use a square strainer to rinse gravel.

itZme, You use SCREWS to hold down veggies? This is surely dangerous, what if one of your fish scratched itself, cort their mouth or tried to swollow it!!??


Another use for Margerine tubs is to pierce holes in it in a line all the way around the top.
Pop your newly aquired fish + water into the tub so that it is filled a couple of centimeteres below the holes.
After the water temperatures have stabalised, push the tub down so that water comes in through the holes, mixing with the water fromthe back.
Wait a minute or two then scoop the fish out of the box and into the tank.

Ok, I think I can almost top them all......

A little backstory... My mother , when I was pregnant, bought me some HIDEOUS nylon underwear... I never wore them, they were the BIGGEST UGLIEST things I had ever seen!! They have been living in a drawer for years (my youngest is 6yrs old), brand new in a package, as of course I figured they would come in handy one day. They were brand new, I couldnt just toss them out! Right?? LOL.

Well, my darling husband decided to suprise me, and gave me a huge ammonia spike by getting me too many new fishies...

I don't wear nylons, but I knew I needed to stick some established gravel into the tank to help with the mini cycle....

So I cut them babies up, and used a piece of the material to hold some old gravel up in my tank LOL. !!! And saved another piece for straining my baby brine shrimp..

Now THATS creative! LOL

i think you are over-reacting. fish arent that stupid, if nothing spooks them, they wont get hurt. i dont think they will try to swallow something that is hard and doesnt have a taste, unless this fish's mouth is alot bigger than the screw.
