Honey Gourami Really Sick

The only thing I'd worry about is getting high nitrates but I guess I'll have to cross that bridge when I come to it.

I wouldn't worry about the nitrates. Mine are at 5.0ppm. I did a complete water change on Saturday before adding the fish. The nitrates haven't budged at over the last couple of days.

Yeah but mine don't seem to go below 15-20 now. Which is bad when you consider how many water changes I do.

It's odd really, it all points to either over feeding or overstocking and I don't think I'm either

No you aren't doing either. Could it be to do with the ferts ?? 15-20 is ok isn't it ?? If you were over-stocked (which i don't believe for one minute you are) then you'd be getting problems with your Ammonia levels I think.

You weren't going overboard with the waterchanges were you caz? you know this mini cycle you were on about, what were the results of it? was it just ammonia readings, or nitrite too?

if you have experienced a spike I don't think you could say it was the bacteria unless you dumped a load of fish food in there! I have dying leaves and what not in my tank and it doesn't do anything. Is your filter a fluval internal?

Yeah 15-20 is fine but I think it's the plants keeping it that low.

Hi Simon, yeah it's the Fluval U2. I had clear Nitrite readings last night, not sunday but I did on Saturday and Friday. That's another mystery coz it seems to keep happening now. Ammonia still showed up last night but I put that down to the TPN.To be honest I ignore the Ammonia readings, it's just the Nitrite ones that worry me. I am starting to wonder if something's up with my filter. Thiking of getting the U3 but worried it'll be too big for my tank.

Do you have any ideas what could have caused it? Interestingly I've only had these problems since I've been using TPN and Easy Carbo but I'll be really angry is these are causing spikes seeing as no-one else has Nitrite showings using it.

Just keep the tank clear of all chemicals for now and just monitor the situation. If you give it time to settle hopefully all will be ok.

Hiya, yeah thanks. Had a quick look this morning and she's still out of hiding so fingers crossed.

I do think there's an element of harassment from the male contributing here though. He left her alone whilst she was hiding but he was chasing her again last night trying to nip her tail. Someone suggested I get another female (I've seen some lovely Red Honeys) which I was gonna do weekend just gone but then I had the spike issues and she was sick and thought it better to hold off. It's catch 22 though isn't it coz being harassed might be a big reason why she's ill so getting another female could be her best medicine.....but of course it won't be good for the water stats.

I'l see how things are this weekend.

best of luck caz...

The u3 would be fine but it may look visually a bit big. Maybe look for a second hand external filter? or atleast think about it. The U2 should be sufficient really though..atleast up to 3/4 of your stock

Im sure it said it's suitable for loads bigger than my tank. Tis why it's confusing.

I'd love to get an external but I need one that's silent or virtually silent coz my tank's in my bedroom.....

To relax me :grr:

Which one did you get in the end?

I've have the U3 in my 60l caz. While I think the U2 would be sufficient I really don't see a point in changing the filter as the physical filter n motor etc probably isn't causing any problems.

Hiya

You reckon I should just stick as I am then or get the U3?

What stocking you got in yor 60L?

Stick as you are, the U range has a large amount of media capacity, plenty for your stocking anyways.

My stock was as my sig shows. But since I had an ammonia spike (my own fault).
I've lost all but 1 or 2 blue tiger shrimp.

So it's now... 1-2 blue tiger shrimp, 1 adult apple snail and some MTS.

But it will be... 10 blue tigers, 10 snowballs, 10 yellow shrimp, 1 adult apple, 10-13 baby apples (possibly split them between the 60l and the 35l apisto tank) and a few MTS.

The of course the shrimp will breed. Fingers crossed for no more ammonia spikes.
The shrimp will be allowed to increase up to around 90 or so altogether (ish) but will be at varying sizes as I will be re-homing most shrimplets when they're 1cm or more.
And most of the baby apples will be rehomed once they're big enough.

Lol you like shrimp and snails then?

She's gone back behind the filter now. I noticed before one of my Platys "messing"with her which is really unusual coz Platys and Gouramis usually don't even see each other. Do you think it's coz she's sick?

I'm wondering if a temp tank divider might be an idea. So she can rest without being hassled without the stress of new/crap water conditions.

I got a all pond solutions filter but it would be over the top for your tank I think, as curiosity said it doesn't seem to be needing the upgrade.

Curiosity, can't believe you lost so many shrimp! I thought you lost some but not the majority... no wonder you wanted some fish.
