Hob Vs. Canister Filters

Tailor your filtration to your stocking, all filters have their strong & weak points.

My filters are noisy because they're rattling, not because of the water flow. I think the one in particular is just old and ready to give it up. So rather than spend the money on another HOB I was considering an external canister (Fluval?) for my 55g. Once I switch, should I also use a powerhead?

I do recommend Eheims over Fluvals: in my experience, they are slightly more reliable, easier to maintain and quieter. You shouldn't need a powerhead, as long as you at least match your new filter to your current flow or desired flow.
