If i get an HMA filter, will this lower my HMA?

I am sitting at 130 ish just now, and i need it to be much lower. If the HMA filter will not do this, what will?

Cheers

i'm gonna move this over to the Cichlid section as you may not get any answers in here.

not sure what you mean by lower your hma? hma refers to the filter itself . hma filter = heavy metal axe filter . tap water is filtered through various cartridges to remove chlorine , chloramines and dissolved metals/organic sompounds . , hardness etc is not affected .

oops, meant TDS.

I am really confused! I know a HMA takes out heavy metals, and RO puts the tap water back to being 'pure'. But what do i need? How many pods do i need?

I want to lower my TDS, so from what i understand i need RO system?

I understand the HMA filters mean you can use 100% of teh water that goes through it, but i understand the ame does not go for RO?

yes with hma you have zero waste water . hma doesnt affect ph or tds. to be sure of lowering tds RO would be the way to go as it removes virtually everything . lowering both the tds and the ph . altho this is only really neccassary if youre trying to breed your discus . in the vast majority of cases didcus in a display tank will be fine without using ro water

Yeh i am breeding. I need to lower my TDS. All my discus in all my tanks are just on normal tap water just now.

My PH is fine as is, pretty soft water where i am. But the TDS needs lowered, so RO it is.

How many pods would i need in the Ro system? I saw a 4 pod which said the last pod lowers TDS to zero.... does that mean the 3 pod system would not do what i need it to?

to be honest im not overly clued up on the finer points of it all . i didnt try to breed my discus so i only researched the verey basics of it . you should be able to find the answers you need here

HI, I have a two pod RO Unit, because my tap water is TDS 250+ and PH of 8. I'm keeping amazon fish so to get it neutral this works, it has a filter pod, carbon pod and then the membrane. the inline TDS meter usually reads a TDS of 8-12. so very low! have had it about 4months now.

However, it's not good to use just RO water, so people either mix it back with tap water or using a premade salt mix (i think there's some specifically for discus). I personally mix with 50% tap for eae of calculation and my TDS in my tank is now 130ish and PH around 7.

hope this helps!
