Ok. I can't really do that though since it would potentially destroy all of my beneficial bacteria.

Not true, beneficial bacteria live on everything in the tank, so the sponge is just a good canadate. I did it for over a month and never had problems.

this is a link to some pics i posted about good coverage for fry...consequently i now have 33 beautiful little fry even the teeniest of them all have plenty of places to hide.
