:look:
You see I just recently bought a 2.5 gallon aquarium from my co-worker thinking it would be a fun new hobby for a few fish. However, my parents have gotten a ton of fish and I feel it is overpopulated.

There is
1 Zebra Danio
1 red and white fantail
1 chinese algea eater
5 ghost shrimp
1 guppies

According to my parents, the pet store said they could buy this many fish because they are all small and that the live plants will provide enough oxygen. There is also a filter and a lighted hood on the aquarium.

However if I am right and my tank is overstock please suggest what size I should most likely upgrade too, and what combination of these fish can possibly stay in the 2.5 gallon tank?

The fantail needs 20 gallons.

The shrino is the only thing ya got thats suitable. The fantail is coldwater. So it shouldnt be mixed with the others.

also danios should be kept in groups of 4-5
and they need 10 gallons

and finally Chinese algae eater grow quite big and once they get bigger than 2 inches they are killers

and in such a small aquarium a zebra danio will nip at the fantail's and the guppy's fins

the fan tail needs about 30 gallons minimum with a massive external, the chinese algae eater will kill the others.

zebra danios need to be kept in groups in tanks that are about 3 foot long, guppies need a bigger tank

get them all re homed bar the shrimp

Ditto what everyone else has said. About the only thing you can keep in that tank are the shrimp. Everything else, you need to get a bigger tank or take those fish back to the store (or rehome them somewhere else if you can't).

Those fish and shrimp are probably going to become very sick soon due to the ammonia building up in the uncycled tank.

Hi amazing and welcome to the forums, you defineately have too many fish there - as mentioned above check if you can take some back to the store ;)

You menion the tank is from a workmate, do you know if the tank/filter is cycled? if not you will have issues in a few days if not sooner, it may be a good idea to look in the resource centre in the "new to the hobby" section under fish in cycle.

There are loads of people on here who can help - but people are quite protective of fish and can sometimes sound quite tetchy and not seem to offer solutions, have a good read and post any questions

Good luck.

Paul.

Yes, can picture your parents standing there chatting with the worker in the pet shop...

Its kind of like asking nutritional advice when on the candy factory tour, they're all so helpful! "Yes, candy bars are all you need for good nutrition! Be sure to take the larger packages if you have kids!" "Our candy comes in all types and you'll want some hard candies as well as all those chocolate bars." "And here's a giant chocolate rabbit, raises the spirits during the spring season, so we often recomnend this about now." Our factory nutritionists have advance degrees!

Anyway, you get the idea. Can't say enough about what good info you can get... in contrast... from the good hobbyists here on the forum!

^^^^^^^An incredibly accurate analogy there!
I've often found my lfs is very knowledgable but only when you ask the right questions. They'll not be forth coming with information that might deter you from buying ANYTHING, unless you specifically ask.

Oh and just to back people up Chinese algae eater = killer. They're litterally sucker your fish to death leaving them to die of horrible open sores etc.
