Help My Fish Are Dieing

I have had a fish tank for about 3 years now and clean it about every 6 weeks ....With no problem BUT now my fish are dieing off slowly?

I cleaned the tank about 4 weeks ago like I do normally but I seem to be getting a white web kind stringy stuff in the tank going from one side to the other?
I have never seen this before...Could it be the heater in the tank giving up on me or what I am lost...

Please Help

every 6 weeks??? maintenance should be weekly mate i think that could be a big part of the problem.

can you give us some more details on your tank

size, inhabtants, equipment, ph, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate is a good start

All I know is I been doing this for a the last 3 years and every thing seemed to be fine but over night the water went cloudy and when I came home after work there was this white stuff all over the tank? It looked liked someone had cracked an eye in the water... My tank is a hexagon one about 18 inches wide and 3 feet high inside I have a heater an air stone and 1 small rock for them to swim round....

I did have 2 cat fish but they have gone and I have about 5 neon’s

you just have 5 neons in there now?

do you have a filter?

undergravel filtration then.

can you tell me what you do when you maintain the tank? every details of what you do, the more you tell us the more likely we are to be able to help you out.

have you got a test kit? can you test your water for ph, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate and tell us the results please

no i don't have a testing kit but i just been on the web and it looks like hair algae....

could be, but that doesn't kill your fish!

what fish did you have and when did they die?

you should definately get a test kit though, no way we can help you properly without water stats. you can also take a sample of water to the lfs and ask them to check for you. get them to write down what the results are for you don't just take they're word for it if they say fine
