Help Me Identify This Geophagus.

I have had this fish for a while now. She never looked like pairing up with my Brasiliensis male, and is stalled at around 4.5 inches in length for some time.

Here she is with the Brasiliensis

I am starting to think she may be an iporangensis??

Any ideas?

How long has it been stalled at 4.5 inches? If its been like that for a few months like 3/4 months then yeah I would say Iporangensis - not sure if its just the photo angle though but do they have yellow spangles down the side flank?

It is hard to tell, at least 2-3 months without much in the way of growth. The Male, I am almost certain is a Brasiliensis.
I actually lost him recently, and would like to try and find a pair for her. So, making sure I work out what she actually is, is kinda key

Confusing!! The male grew to nearly 6 inches before he died, do you still think he was Iporangenis?

So the 1st pic (1st post) is the one you still have? If so, then definately brailiensis. The Male is the second pic? (1st post) Could be brasiliensis, but the 'bahia red' variety.

I would say the female (first pic) is Brazilliensis too, I have one male & 3 females and my male does not look anything like your male. Just one thing before you do get a male do you know how much these guys breed!!!

Interesting. I was sure the male was Bra rather than ip... Looks like i was mistaken!

Anyone know where I can get my hands on a decent sized Male??

My group of 4 spawn & raise fry to free swimming week 1 around 200 fry that last about 4-5 days(get eaten by the other tank mates) second week the second female spawns again around 200 fry, then its about 10 days after the fry have gone the 3rd female spawns. By the time the first one comes around to spawning again her "brood" lasts about a week because the pictus cats & bristle nose just dont want to eat any more. Shame I am too far away in Birmingham I would have sold you my group!

I was thinking of you New World cichlid keepers this afternoon, when I saw a tank of ~15, 4cm SL G. brasiliensis youngsters at the "Fetsival Of Fishkeeping"...

As they were free to a good home!

Not knowing my Geos at all, I could not remember if this was a species some of you were despertately trying to acquire.

At almost as good a deal though, I bought 12 Persian Killifish youngsters and 11 Golden Kuhli Loaches for £20!
