Help! fish distressed and breathing from surface

That fine use that, hot and cold till the temp matches the tank.

the only thermometer is glued on the side of the tank - should I just gauge by hand?

and use this 'ammo lock'

cheers

Yes, if they go on much longer gasping there going to die, good luck try and be accurate as possible.

well sadly one had died by the time I had got back from reading this

the rest are now transfered and are swimming normally - i've moved the filter and thermometre across to the new mini tank, and fingers crossed they can keep going til monday.

*thanks* so much for all your help

sh-t,
now calming after panic earlier and re-reading this thread - you weren't suggesting I moved the fish to another tank with fresh water (which is what I've done) .. you meant change the water in the tank with the fish still there?
i could cry!
what now - should i move fish back after changing water, or keep in their new temp home?
or maybe i did understand right?

Yes youve got it a little wrong, you need to take about 25% of the water out of the main tank

Then get some fresh tap water add whatever you can find to make the water safe for the fish as stated above then add it to the main tank.

Leave it for a while so that it warms upto the tank temperature probably about 25 degrees minimum

Then move the fish back into the main tank

Leave the lights off afterwards to create a slightly less stressful environment for the fish.

Oh and turn off power to the pumps, heaters and lights before you start any of the above

Sorry for all your problems, i bet you will be glad when your sisters back, how are the fish now, sorry for the one you lossed.R.I.P.

hi

Well i was delighted this morning to see that they were all still alive in their very small new tank, but this afternoon they seemed to breathing particularly fast and so figured I would risk moving them back to the main tank with a change of water.

So at the moment they are back in the tank with a change of water - perhaps a bit less than 25% and the good news is that the two who were hanging upside down at the surface last night to breath are now swimming around realtively normally. They all seem jumpy and have suffered much stress :-( but at the moment are looking ok.

I've done an ammonium test about an hour after putting them back and it seemed neutral.

Thanks for the tip on the lights (and the other support here!)

One thing that still wories me is the filter - a Fluval 3 Plus - which is not making anywhere near the noise it has in the past and does not seem to be creating water currents around its spout at the top. i'm wondering if it is broken and if perhaps this was what triggered the problems in the first place.. any tips as to what to do if so? I tried chopping the water with a net to aerate it a bit..

but sister home tomorrow and hopefully all sorted then - all hail the heroic fish for surving the ordeal and prayers they keep it up.

thanks all!

I think on the Fluval pump you have there is a little device on top which creates bubbles. Its called a venturi effect device. This is of course if your sister has chosen to fit it as its an optional part that comes with the pump. This is the bit that makes all the noise.

My Fluval 2 Plus runs silently without the venturi device. With it you can hear the bubbles being created and popping etc... Its a fiddly little device and if you moved it even the tiniest amount it can stop creating bubbles all together. It also needs to be poking out of the water otherwise it wont work !

On the pump itself there should be a speed lever (A little blue handle on mine) which moves side to side, try moving this to see if you get a better flow.

Try to not use the net at all unless your catching the fish or debris in the water, it will scare the life out of the fish if your swinging it round wildly :D

Thanks Rich,

It is indeed that bit at the top that isn't doing its thang. There is a faint hum coming from the rest of the filter so am guessing (hoping) that it is filtering something. the side lever is turned up full.

Final question (!) - after a stressful experience (they've been moved three times with the nets in the past 24 hours) should I feed as normal today? less / more? slight concern that it was the pellet food that caused the fish to die in the first place

nic

I would say let them go without food for a day until your sister gets back. Just incase youve overfed them or anything like that.

They will survive just fine without food for a day. I doubt the pellets would be the problem to be honest

Best to just leave them alone for now in the dark ;)

When your sister gets back can you tell her to post, as she overstocked by the sounds of it, need a full stock list, and the fluval 2 is no good for a goldfish as they are big waste producers.
