got up this morning and decided the oscar tank needed a really good clean (( massive mistake))
i syphoned off about 80% of the water, then the heater started smoking as i pulled the wrong plug out-melting the holder, and cracked when i took it out
was busy doing ( concentrating ) on the gravel vac, as the bottom was really minging, then suddenly noticed, i had taken way too much water out- i mean wayyy too much
{{{the tank occupants were 3 huge 3 spot gouramis, 2 oscars, convicts, 2 clown loach,common plec}}}}}

anyway in a panic realising there was not enough water in, i turned on the hose pipe, started filling the tank, the kids all messing about behind me, the largest of the 3 spot starts trying to jump out of he tank.so my son netted him took him back to the tank he was in before yesterday, and i heard a massive scream, the fish had jumped out and fallen behind the tank, and was sitting in a trainer that one of the kids had left under the tank,we caught him and put him in (( all the time the hose still going))i go back in the lounge and buddy and jambo ( my oscars) are floating lifelessly around the tank-- i cant tell you how i felt, shear panic, sick,scared,ashamed.. thats for starters, so i filled a bucket full of hot water and my son stood swirling the water with his arm while i poured it in slowley (( hose is off now)), they had hit the ground, barley moving,i had killed them, i put my hand in and was nudging them, to make them swim, crying my eyes out- i couldnt believe what a stupid mistake i had made, all by trying to do something good,
they started slowley moving about, then i hoped they were sulking due to the massive interruption, ,but i was watching them like a hawk, still feeling so bad i cant describe it, it was awful, this was all about 10 am today..they are at the moment enjoying their tea/dinner, as though nothing had happend...i wont forgive myself for that hour long screw up, so i have decided to quit the hobby- yes it kills me to say it, but i could never cope with that again, i simply dont have the time or the money needed for this hobby ( if i had the cash i would have had an external filter,- and all of this wouldnt have been needed.. and the kids are so demanding, (quite rightly), everything has to be rushed)
i am currently treating the 3 spot that jumped out with melafix, as i cant actually see anything wrong with him- but i expect he will die from the shock
the oscars will be very well cared for untill i can rehome them- but ill be going back to my old 20% daily routine (( i couldnt live with myself if i harmed these guys))
the rest of my fish, i will advertise locally, and tanks
all thats left is to thank everone on here for your time devotion, and paitence . and for teaching me everything i now about fish- i have let a lot of you down today, and im so sorry, ill obviously keep you updated on where and how things go.

Oh Shelagh, I'm so sorry to hear the problems that you've had.

I can totally sympathise with how you're feeling, a few months back now I was having some problems with our house and didn't have time to look after all the tanks properly and my Oscar ended up getting HITH. I beat myself up about it something chronic and couldn't bear to keep him so I re-homed him to someone I knew could look after him.

But I'd urge you not to quit the hobby altogether, just scale things back a bit, just keep 1 small low maintenance tank and focus on that, 1 small sensibly stocked tank shouldnt be too expensive or time consuming.

Please we all make mistakes you love your fish and they make you happy, don't leave if you are finding it too much reduce the number of tanks you have.

I get distracted when I'm looking after the fish due to my 5 year old and 3 year old so I do any water changes after 8pm or when they are out.

We have a tank vac we use that cleans the tank without removing water which we use first (£12 Argos) we then do a 25% change once a week on the big tank, 30% daily on the beta and 40/50% daily on the fry tank.

Honestly I've made some big mistakes that have cost me a lot more dearly than a few fish, if I could change thing I would but I can't I will learn from it and I carry on, you feel guilty now but you have nothing to be guilty for it was a accident. Have a cup of tea, glass of wine or anything that will make you sit and rest and think if getting rid of the fish will make you happy.

Hugs to you.

gutted mate but just wait a while and firstly learn from your mistakes and secondly never do something on the heat of the moment!!!
Iam sure 99.9% of us here have had one disastar or another to do with fish and puts us on the brink of giving up,,,,a few times for me,,,one time was when i first started and once my fishes all died from some major whitespot outbrake i also gave up!!! But came back to the hobbie again once i came back from working in spain,,,,Also as you realise i got into south/central americans and once they were beating each other and killings i neally gave up again, but now if only i listened fully to people and studied more i would have realised you cannot keep a mutituied of cichlids in a tank together unless a largggge tank!!!!but just give yourself a time to reflect and see how you really feel!!!!!

^ what miss wiggle said. And im sorry about your fish. The three spot should make it, there VERY HARDY. My uncle ahd a oscar jump out of his tank in the middle of the night, and he found it the next morning, appeard dead, three it in the tank, and came back later an dfound it swimming aorund. I also had BABY CONVICTS, like 1 week old free swimming get stuck in a container i use for fillinf my tanks up, and i didnt know it. So 3 days later i filled the ocntainer back up, and i saW SOME BABY convicts swimming aorund in there, thats right, 3 days, no air, no warmth, no food, no water, and they were still alive, and they were BABIES. I tihnk your 3 spot will make it.

Sorry to hear about your morning :( But don't quit. We all make mistakes. This week i accidentally spilled some nitrate testing chemicals into my tank and all my fish died, bar too. I felt horrible, but i decided to go on and change the tank into a shrimp tank. Now all i have to do is watch and put an algae wafer in every few days.

Please dont give up. :good:

yup i've done that, thankfull was only a tiny amount and a few massive water changes later there were no consequences.

we all make mistakes though

being me, it was the whole bloody bottle :(

Definitely don't quit because of one bad mistake - everybody here's probably made one. I wiped out my biofilter following LFS advice for dealing with an algae bloom. My grandfather's been keeping fish for fifty years, and has had some epic failures - once he set a canister filter too close to a radiator in the winter and came back from work to a tank full of poached gold piranhas.

aww thanks you lot for your unconditional support, ive nearly calmed down, and almost stopped crying,it was just a stupid stupid mistake, and im so angry at myself for having made it, you all know how much i adore buddy and jambo, they are like the 2 well behaved( lol) children that i never had
i am definatley going to get rid of some of the tanks, but im saving the best ( the boyz) i cant part with them they mean way too much to me, ihave called my lfs and hes got a tetratec ex1200, in for £115..they are on ebay for £62, so ill go and see him in the morning, see if we cant do a deal- hes soft he will drop the price, i been and got a new heater,so thats sorted, and i think i may be back in the good books with the boyz, tho i am aware im skating on very thin ice..im got some serious groveling to do
the 3 spot is looking fine, hes eaten, and is swimming about ok, but time will tell
thankyou ever so much

Glad you're feeling a little better Shelagh, very glad you're not giving up the boys, just cut back on the other tanks and it'll make things easier.

for filters have a look at these on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RENA-XP3-EXTERNAL-AQ...1QQcmdZViewItem

good cheap reliable filters are the Rena's and that model is big enough for your tank although you may wanna run an internal alongside it or something like that.

Good, you will save money if you get rid of some tanks anyway, so your boys get the best treatment. Good luck!
