I also really liked my green severum but much prefer the males due to the red eyes and markings in the face. I have a nice JD but too shy. Chocolate cichlid really colored up beautiful after grew larger. I like the severum and chocolate cichlides because not too aggressive. Have an oscar w a chocolate and some FMs. May do a severum again but severum died when ilost power and thought i would try an oscar. Firemouths are hardy but not as mean as convincts and are cheap and color up nice when get bigger.

If you are buying more Barbs, have a look at Black Ruby Barbs or Odessa Barbs instead of Tigers. I currently have 17 of the former and the colour diferential between male and female is immense. They almost look like different species when the males are all coloured up and ready for action. Oh, and they are great shoaling fish.

A my gold sev is awesome! I've gad rotkeils before, and tbh, much prefer my current gold. Also got a green sev which isn't quite as nice imo.

Look into jade eyeds, very interesting indeed. The females colour change is unbelievable! Beautiful fish that are overlooked.

I'm getting the tank tomorrow apparently, some lady wants to trade me for one of my smaller tanks, as she doesn't have room for her big one anymore.

I took a trip to the LFS as well to pick up some pH up and pH down for just in case things, good to be prepared and whatnot, and they had Turquoise Severums on clearance

So I kinda wanted to buy one and quarantine it and such while the new tank is being set up

The problem is, I can't find any info on these guys whatsoever

do you know anything about them?

Never heard of them or seen them before. Any pics?

Unless it is a colour morph of the greens?

Well, they weren't even turquoise. actually kinda dark brown, with stripes similar to convicts

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUyAvld9QGY this is about right.

Ask Wills or Hamfist. They're both people who know more about severum that most IMHO.

Turquoise sevs from what I have been told are the name given in general to the "blue severums" that the catch location is not known, you can also find them listed as Belem Severums, or Tapajos and some other river/location names. Personally I would steer clear of red spot severums unless you are having smaller fish, but not small enough to be eaten. Greens are nice but can be aggressive, Golds in my experience are not too bad, the Belem are more peaceful but the most peaceful is the rotkeil. I do have red spot, gold, belem & rotkeil at the moment.

As was suggested earlier, the turquoise sev is just a colour morph of green sev. Having said that, the whole species classification of severums is complete chaos at the moment, with so many disagreeing views.

As far as I understand, the general concensus is that greens, golds, red spots, belem & turquoise sevs are all just colour morphs of H.efasciatus. THen there are the rotkeils, which most consider a seperate species, although they readily interbreed with efasciatus. Then there are the genuine mouthbrooders, H.severus.

Another problem is that sevs have been kept and interbred in captivity for so many years that there is such an intermingling of the gene pool around in the trade.

They are all GREAT fish though !

Yeh my mate has a tank full of baby Rotkeil x Efaciatus, they are probably where these big 'Red Shoulders' are from (cross breeding)
