I am devastated, gutted and horrified angry with myself :grr:
I took the lid off my divided betta tank to feed them - got distracted and walked to the other room without putting the lid back on.

2 minutes later I'm back in the room and there's my cat with a chewed up and mangled fish on the floor ! It's just horrific :-( but what could I do ? I can't be angry with the cat can I (sigh).
Poor fish is dead as dead can be - no doubt about that.

Just tonight I was looking at it thinking how beautiful and was and that I should put him in his own large tank for better viewing

RIP little fishie (sorry Bettaman)

Im so sorry to hear that Bloozoo :-( He really was a beautiful fish!!

I losta killifish just yesterday in a similar way.. He jumped out of the tank through a tiny gap between the tank and the lid that i hadn't noticed.. My dog picked him up and by the time i got him out of Riley's mouth he was dead :(

Accident's happen though.. Dont beat yourself up about it too much

It's amazing how something living in the company of humans for so long can retain so much of it's wild instinct. Especially cats. It makes me wonder what my Turk, Lily, will do when she sees all these bettas in bowls? She's an acrobat and loves to push things over.

I'm sorry for the loss of your little fish. He was gorgeous.

Thanks guys :-( now the cat is lying on my lap purring as though butter couldn't melt in it's mouth.
My lesson well and truly learnt.

sorry for the fish but all things happen for a reason my cat went in my fish house and got on the table at the fish but fell off into the filter and don't go near the fish house now so she learned her lesson....... as it must of reminded her of when she was young she fell in a scalding hot bath and scalded her stomach thought we had lost her she don't go near the bath room either...... :( for the fish

Just keep in mind your kitty might not have meant to hurt it. My cats are so domesticated they no longer hunt to kill or eat, they hunt to play. Tho I'm afraid any one of my cats would play my Red Fire Eel to death, if given the chance. :(\

I am very sorry for your loss he was GORGEOUS

sry bloozoo, that had to of been horrible, but u know, accidents happen, i have them all the time and so does everyone else here, best not to beat yourelf up about it, there was nothing you could do, whats done is done :/

So sorry for your loss. He was gorgeous. But it wasn't your fault. I constantly get side tracked while feeding in the morning.

Actually now that I think of it, I get side tracked no matter what I'm doing... :dunno:

I'm so sorry to hear that bloozoo2, that must have been so horrible for you :(
RIP little fishy.

Luckily my cat is a retard and never bothers my fish... I have a couple in uncovered bowls (I know, bad me, but I keep the water level low. Oddly I've lost fish out of Aquaviews and such but not out of uncovered bowls) but my cat doesn't even seen to notice the fish in them. She does, however, drink out of them

During hurricane Rita the fish were all kinda crazy (you know how they get during storms) and my African butterfly managed to jump out. I only noticed it later that night because I saw the cat sniffing it, but it was definitely long since dead by the time she found it.

So sorry to hear about your gorgeous boy :byebye:

As everyone else has said, its a tragic accident and one which will make me think carefully. I have divided tanks in my kitchen which only have condensation trays for lids and my cat could easily get into them.

<bans Tabby from kitchen from now on>

Thanks Synirr and everyone else !
But I thought my cat was the same. The tank's actually been open for a good 6 months but he's been drinking so much of the water in the tank I actually thought he had diabetes
The water level dropped so much that I had to top up the tank every couple of days.

So it's probably only been about a month now that the lids been on constantly.

Actually.......now that I think about it....... plakats are jumpers more so than HM or CT's aren't they ? Perhaps he jumped onto the desk and was flopping around and the cat thought it was a toy ? :dunno:
Ah well, lids back on and that's where it stays.

Now..... not to look at Bettamans' site for a replacement is another thing :shifty:

Awww that's so sad. My cats do notice my fish. They like sitting on them so they get the rising warmth too. Oddly Ollies tank doesn't have a proper lid although it is covered. The cats could easliy knock it off but they never bother him at all! :dunno: They're more interested in the golden gouramies where there's no way they can get near them. Possibly because the fish look at them and tease them knowing they're quite safe.
He was a beautiful fish so it's a real loss. Bet you do go look for another tho. :shifty:
Hugs,
P.
