guppy (strange behavior) *Great news UPDATED12:58

yeah, I know they're not bloated or constipated b/c they have been like that for months now, and semmingly doing fine. So feed less and don't feed at all on 1 day of week?

Could I get a 5 gal hex as a quarentine/fry tank w/ a ugf or hob filter? I'm not gonna worry with separating them to much (fry).

When they are 4-5 weeks old (key time to separate) are they large enough to be let into a tank with other fishies, or still to small to survive?

5 gal may be a little small for a fry tank. 10 gals or more is usally better. Also, I'd go for a sponge filter. Less chance of the fry getting sucked up or anything.

Just curious...why do you need to seperate the fry at 4-5 weeks old? The general rule of thumb for putting them back in the main tank, is when they are big enough to not fit in the biggest fish's mouth. Maybe a little after that, so they don't get bullied.

And fasting your fish one or two days a week is generally considered pretty good for them. :)

personally i leave my guppy fry in with the parents with good success...i dont think you need another tank, before you know it you will have plentttttyyy of gups!

they say guppy fry will start to breed w/ one another after that. So 5g will be fine for quaretining? (SP)

so, do a survival of the fittest scenario?

I plan to sell them after a few weeks old. I'd say I have 15 plants (plastic) in a 29 and 2 decorations. I also have gravel :/ , I've heard that's a no no with fry...

I don't think Guppy fry can breed at a month old. More like 3-4 months. In my experience, anyway.

Survival of the fittest may be best, You could get VERY overrun with Guppies, otherwise.

And 5 gals may also be a bit small as a quarantine tank. :/

okay...

That fungus is really looking nasty now... I'm concerned...

the meds are in there, but the fungus seems to be getting worse...

it lokks like he's bleeding under it :/

will i need to remove gravel? or not when you do survival of the fittest?

For the fungus, I'd post in the Emergency section. They might have some helpful tips.

Gravel should be okay...as long as it's not TOO big...which it sounds like it's not.

i'll get a pic of the gravel for you if I can...

Off to the ES

Red streaks under it? It could be Septicemia too....

Is the fungus really puffy looking, or does it look more like fuzz? Trying to figure out if it is Columnaris, which may be why the Fungus treatment doesn't look like it's doing much...

it doesn't protrude much it only looks kinda fuzzy from the side, but if you look from the top, it only protrudes OVER his eye, other than that, from top you can't tell. It is now in his eye, and his swim bladder is acting up. He's darting and swiming on his side, ramming the walls. I'm giving him a salt bath now...

Ah...sounds like Columnaris. Sorry I said Fungus in the first place, I should have gotten more information. SO sorry about that.

A Salt bath may help some.

Also, Frequent water changes should help. You can try feeding him medicated food, containing oxytetracycline, tetracycline or kanamycin.

Can you issolate him anywhere? Then you could treat with Kanacyn, if you can find it. Otherwise, plain Maracyn or tetracycline can be used.

Good luck.

i gave him a salt bath...

In the ES, i told them he was paralyzed (seemingly) on the side the columnaris was on b/c he don't move that fin, nor does he breathe with the gills. After the bath, he started to use those gills and the fin. The fin he uses alot now, but the gills are really looking quite a deep red or maybe kind of purple. The red thing was the scales around his fins :p . I just never analyzed him close enough to realize he was that deep of a red...

EDIT: speeling lol

Red gills usually indicate Gill Flukes....darn! They are back again. Poor little Guppy.

I'd issolate him. You said you have a 10 gallon that is close to being cycled...can you put him in there? Then treat for his diseases? I reccommend something with Copper in it for the Gill Flukes. Then what I said earlier for the Columnaris. Salt Baths are good...just don't do it too often, or they can start getting faint, and keel over.

And just to add....I'm going to be gone for a while, so I probably won't be able to answer any more questions until tomorrow morning. :/
