O i wanted to add also, could I get a few fruit tetras in stead of the rams or otos? (They look like discuses and grow to 2'' in length.  I'd say they get tobe an inch from bottom to top, best guess)
if you want fish that are dyed artificially with an ink you could get the "fruit" tetras....they will most lilkely die a horrible death and you will support the practice of dying fish

i don't see how any tetra could be more gorgeous than a ram?!?! :-(
no no no. I just was saying, not b/c I don't like them, none of my LFS's have any of these. I live in a very small town. But will they die b/c they a dyed? or just b/c? That's aweful!

EDIT: I never new they were dyed until just a few seconds ago, after ann. answered my question.

Yeah, those are the dyed ones. I'm not sure if you'd want those...they usually die early in life, due to the dyeing process.

I'd personally go for the Rams. Golds are my favorite, and they have lots of personality.

Edit: Okay, abstract beat me to it. :p

Golds are my favs too, well from the pics I've seen :)

it is unfortunate that you can't find rams...i also thought i couldn't find rams for awhile but you will find that fish come in and out of season...just because you don't see certain fish now, wait 2 months and the general supply in stores will shift slightly...chances are if you keep your eyes open you will find blue or gold rams in stock...

if you're not patient, ask if they can order you in some - they wouldn't be that expensive IMO..

as has already been stated, i would just stay away from anything that looks as unnatural as those fruit tetras (or anything with "fruit" in the name even!), because it has most likely been dyed - and the reason they die is because they are literally injected using a needle - look at how small the fish is now and think of how small it was when it got dyed - even the smallest needle is VERY VERY large compared to these small creatures...it's sad to see, but with people out there buying them (for the same reasons you like them), it will be a practice we will probably see more of in the future

Yeah...I've had German Blue Rams, Bolivan Rams and Gold Rams...and I have to say, Golds are by far my favorite. They seem to be a slight bit hardier too. I'd show you a picture of one of mine, but I don't want to hijack your post. :p

well, now I know why they are so pretty, and thanks to you, I will not be supporting that practice! I find that horrible.

I do agree now that I think about it, that my fish stores will change. they just got the fruits a few weeks ago!

Would they charge me more If they "special" ordered some rams for me? Or it just depends on the store?

Some will, some won't. I find more and more Rams seem to be coming into my Fish stores, so it may be "Ram Season". I'd keep an eye out for them! :)

How should I acclimate all of the fish? Use bags and do it as if they were newbies, or exchange water between the 2 tanks? I have to treat them both anyway... And should I put all 3 filters on the 29? B/c I have a flame tetra and a betta in a 1g that will be moving to the (2) 10gs, and I need them cycled still.

there are 2 separate 1gs that these 2 fish are in
No one answered these yet, just want to re-post 'em

treat them as if they were new fish...float them in a bag adding water gradually for no longer than 30-45 mins.

after reading through the thread it is tough for me to tell what you are asking about the 3 filters part...the 29 g is not cycled and the 3 filters are from cycled tanks (10 gallon tanks)?

if i'm undestanding this right...there was a 10g with disease...you want to move those fish into a 29g and use the 10g for other purposes? what i would do is thouroughly clean the 10g, let it dry out completely for at least 24 hours (will kill all parasites), clean again and add fish

No. I have 3 tanks, and I was wondering If I should just leave all 3 tank's filters in the 29g... One tank's filter is cycled (enough) and the other 2 were just boiled, so they are dead, and need to be recycled. I am asking if I should put all 3 filters on the 29g ( the 29's, and the 2 ten's)

EDIT: but ur right... If i put the cycled filter on there, then I would have to boil it after I'm done, to keep from contaminating the uncycled tank. so i guess that's a no no.

29 and ten were infected.

I boiled everything (in both tanks), should I still let it stay w/out water for 24hrs?

Getting a little confused here....but anyway...

One ten is cycled. Is this the ten that had the parasites or not? If it didn't have the parasites, yes, I'd put it in the 29 gal to help with cycling. It shouldn't get any parasites, because the 29 gal was boiled and sterilized, correct?

yes. You've got it right. 1 had parasite, one didn't (the cycled one)

even though the 29g is diseased i would still almost put the other 2 filters there because the 10g need some way of being cycled - but then, as you stated, you risk infection of the 10g so it is better to be safe than sorry!

i would still leave the 10g completely bone dry for 24 hours even though you've boiled everything

okay, so don't put the 10's (cycled one's) filter in, but could I put the infected one's in so when I add fish to it, it can have bacteria, or should I leave it dry for 24 hrs. as well?

Wow...I am really confused...

Okay, so one ten gallon is cycled, no parasites ever. I'd stick the filter from there in the 29 gallon, to help speed cycling, and also some gravel. Since the 29 was boiled, and sterilized, it should have no parasites. Therefore, when we take the filter out of there, after the cycling, the 10 gallon shouldn't get any parasites.

And yes, as abstract said, the 10 gallon that had the disease, and was boiled, should dry for a while.

Darn, I hope I have this right...
